Nissan airbag, emblem recall overview:
- Who: Nissan recalled nearly 405,000 of its older-model Titan, Frontier, Pathfinder, Xterra, Armada and Quest vehicles.
- Why: The automaker initiated the recall over concerns the Nissan vehicles are equipped with defective airbag assemblies that can present a projectile hazard if they deploy.
- Where: The Nissan recall is nationwide.
Nissan North America initiated a recall for nearly 405,000 of its older-model pickup trucks, SUVs and minivans over concerns their driver airbag module can wear out, leading to a crack in its emblem posts.
The recall affects certain model year 2008-2011 Nissan Titan, Nissan Frontier, Nissan Xterra, Nissan Pathfinder and Nissan Armada vehicles, along with model year 2008-2009 Nissan Quest vehicles.
The automaker announced the recall after discovering the recalled vehicles’ airbag emblem and container components could detach and “become a projectile” during airbag deployment.
“A detached emblem and/or retainer component may become a projectile during an airbag deployment, increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants,” the recall states.
In a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Nissan says it had been aware of at least four different reports of injuries occurring in connection to the apparent airbag defect.
Nissan still determining how to repair issue, recall states
The automaker says it was first notified in January 2022 about an alleged injury caused by an emblem detachment “during a driver’s airbag deployment on a Model Year 2008 Nissan Titan vehicle.”
A subsequent investigation led to the discovery of three “previous allegations of injury caused by detached emblems related to an airbag deployment event,” Nissan says in its letter to the NHTSA.
“At the time, based on the analysis Nissan conducted on the one (1) available part, Nissan believed it was an isolated incident,” the automaker writes.
Nissan is still studying how to repair the issue and will send interim recall notification letters to potentially affected vehicle owners by April 10, according to the recall.
A class action lawsuit filed against Nissan earlier this month argues the company fails to honor its lease extension agreements by allegedly refusing to stand by the vehicles’ purchase amount once a lease ends.
