  • Why: The recalled vehicles are equipped with Tesla’s autopilot feature, Autosteer, which the automaker says may cause a driver to fail to maintain responsibility for the operation of their vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Where: The recall impacts owners of the recalled Tesla vehicles nationwide.

Tesla recalled more than 2 million vehicles over concerns they are equipped with an autopilot feature that could increase the risk of a crash.

The recall involves model year 2017-2023 Tesla Model 3, 2012-2023 Tesla Model S, 2016-2023 Tesla Model X and 2020-2023 Tesla Model Y vehicles equipped with all versions of its Autosteer feature leading up to the version(s) containing the recall remedy.

Tesla says it is concerned autopilot feature on the recalled vehicles could cause a driver to fail to maintain responsibility for its operation and be unprepared to “intervene as necessary” or fail to recognize when Autosteer is canceled or no longer engaged, according to the recall notice.

Tesla to release free over-the-air software update to resolve autopilot concerns

The automaker plans to remedy the issue by releasing an over-the-air software update at no cost to vehicle owners and expects to mail owner notification letters Feb. 10, 2024, the recall notice states.

Vehicle owners who have more questions about the recall can contact Tesla directly at (877) 798-3752 or the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration at (888) 327-4236 or online

In October, a federal judge in California ruled a group of Tesla vehicle owners would have to go through individual arbitration for their claims the automaker misled consumers about the ability of its autopilot feature.
