Ford door opening recall overview:

  • Who: Ford Motor Co. has recalled 45,173 of its model year 2015 Ford Fiesta, 2016-2020 Ford Fusion and 2016 Lincoln MKZ vehicles.
  • Why: The recall was initiated over concern the vehicles contain a defect that could cause their doors to open while the vehicles are being driven.
  • Where: The recall affects owners of the recalled vehicles nationwide.

Ford Motor Co. has recalled more than 45,000 vehicles over concerns a defect could cause the risk of a door opening while the vehicles are being driven, increasing the possibility of injury or a crash.

The recall involves a total of 45,173 model year 2015 Ford Fiesta, 2016-2020 Ford Fusion and 2016 Lincoln MKZ vehicles, according to a recall notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last month.

In total the recall covers 198 Ford Fiestas, 41,061 Ford Fusions and 3,914 Lincoln MKZ vehicles, according to the notice.

Ford has attributed the defect to a latch sprawl spring tab design that is “susceptible to cracking and failure in areas with high ambient temperatures.”

“A door latch with a fractured pawl spring tab typically results in a ‘door will not close’ condition,” the Ford recall states.

Ford concerned closed doors on recalled vehicles could unlatch while vehicle is being driven

Ford said it is concerned that, in the event a driver is able to successfully close the door on the recalled vehicles, there is a potential for the door to ultimately unlatch while the vehicle is being driven.

Vehicle owners will be instructed to take the recalled vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have their door latch date codes inspected and, if necessary, receive replacement side door latches free of charge, according to the Ford recall.

Mailing of notification letters to vehicle owners was expected to begin Dec. 4 and completed by Dec. 11, according to the recall.

In other news involving Ford, a class action lawsuit was filed against the automaker last month by a pair of consumers arguing it manufactured and sold certain vehicles containing defective automatic transmission systems

I have a 2020 ford fusion plug in hybrid. I chose this over a regular hybrid for the extra electric only miles. Now I am told by ford that I can not plug it in because it could catch fire while driving it. The recall is several years old but ford has no fix yet. Should be a recourse for owners

The article incorrectly states “[t]he recall involves a total of 45,173 model year 2015 Ford Fiesta, 2016-2020 Ford Fusion…”. According the safety recall report, it’s only 2016 Fusions. The picture should also be updated to show a 2016 Fusion, not the newer model.
