Snowmobile recalls overview:

  • Who: Polaris and Bombardier Recreational Products both initiated recalls on certain snowmobile models at the end of August.
  • Why: The recalls were initiated over safety concerns involving dangerous handlebar hooks and the potential for a leaky main injector fuel return hose, posing puncture and fire risks, respectively.
  • Where: The recalls are nationwide.

A pair of recalls was initiated at the end of August for snowmobiles manufactured by Polaris and Bombardier Recreational Products.

Polaris announced a recall of around 15,900 of its model year 2022-2023 Matryx Pro RMK and Matryx RMK Khaos snowmobiles over concerns their handlebar hooks could pose a puncture hazard in the event they impact a body during a crash.

The recalled Polaris snowmobiles — which include an additional 7,040 or so that were sold in Canada — were previously recalled in May 2023 on account of a different hazard, according to a recall published on the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website Aug. 31.

Polaris has received four reports of puncture wounds being caused as a result of a body part making contact with the handlebar hooks on the recalled snowmobiles, according to the recall.

Consumers who own the recalled Polaris snowmobiles are being told to immediately stop using them and to contact the company or one of its authorized dealers to schedule a free repair.

Polaris is also offering owners of the recalled snowmobiles free replacement handlebar hooks that can either be self-installed or installed by an authorized retailer, according to the Polaris recall.

The recalled snowmobiles were sold at Polaris dealers across the nation for between $13,300 and $22,000 from December 2019 through April 2023.

Bombardier recalls certain Ski-Doo, Lynx snowmobiles over fire risk concerns

Bombardier, meanwhile, initiated a recall for about 4,070 of its Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobiles over concerns their main injector fuel return hose could leak, presenting a fire hazard that could result in serious property damage, injury, or death.

The recall, which the CPSC published Aug. 31, also included an additional 3,100 or so Ski-Doo and Lynx Snowmobiles that were sold in Canada.

Bombardier said it has received six reports of snowmobile fuel leaks, with no injuries. The company is contacting all purchasers directly, according to the Bombardier recall.

The recalled Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobiles were equipped with an 850 E-TEC Turbo R Engine — model year 2023 Ski-Doo Freeride 850 E-TEC Turbo R, 2022 Ski-Doo Summit 850 E-TEc Turbo R and 2023 Lynx Shredder 850 E-TEC Turbo R snowmobiles.

Consumers who own the recalled Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobiles are advised to immediately stop using them and to contact Bombardier to schedule a free inspection and fuel return hose replacement.

Bombardier sold the recalled snowmobiles at authorized Ski-Doo and Lynx dealers for between $10,000 and $30,000 from February 2021 through July 2023, according to the recall.

In another recall involving Polaris, the company initiated a recall in August for some of its RZR off-road vehicles over concerns their clutches could fracture, creating fire and injury hazards.
