Ford Explorer Rollaway Recall Overview:

  • Who: Ford has recalled more than 250,000 of its Ford Explorer vehicles.
  • Why: The recall was initiated over concerns the affected Ford Explorer vehicles can roll away while in park due to containing defective rear axle mounting bolts.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

Ford issued a recall for more than 250,000 of its Explorer vehicles over concerns they can roll away while in park due to a potentially defective rear axle mounting bolt.

The recall includes both the gas and electric hybrid version of the 2020-2021 Ford Explorer police vehicles, along with the 2020-2022 Explorer 2.3L RWD, Explorer Hybrid, Explorer plug-in hybrid and Explorer ST.

Ford initiated the recall after becoming concerned that, should the vehicle’s rear axle bolt break, the driveshaft may become disconnected and cause the vehicle to roll away while in park, according to a recall notice published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“If the parking brake is not applied, the loss of the primary park torque will allow the vehicle to roll in park increasing the risk of crash and injury,” the Ford recall states.

Ford Explorer police vehicle owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicles to either a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have their bushing and axle cover replaced free of charge, according to the Ford recall.

Ford says it will instruct owners of the other affected Ford Explorer vehicles to take them to either a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have their Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software updated free of charge.

Ford To Fix Vehicles Free of Charge, According to Recall Notice

Updating the Ford Explorer vehicle’s PCM software will enable the vehicle to engage the vehicle’s “Electronic Park Brake” when “Park is commanded,” according to the Ford recall.

Ford says it has provided a general reimbursement plan for vehicle owners who have already paid the cost for remedies “prior to notification of a safety recall in May 2021.”

Dealers were expected to begin being notified about the recall on Apr. 19 while notification letters to vehicle owners are expected to be mailed out beginning on June 6, according to the Ford recall.

Ford recalled more than 650,000 of its trucks and SUVs earlier this month over concerns they contained front windshield wipers with defective wiper arms

I had two Ford explorers ST’s one was a lease and one was a purchase they were both 2020 ST‘s. Both had to be sent back due to several issues due to electrical and
Some mechanical issues. Ford was never able to find out the cause of these issues both vehicles were taken in more than 10 times trying to get it fixed.
