CYBEX Car Seat Foam Choking Hazard Recall Overview:

  • Who: CYBEX has issued a recall for the U.S. version of its Sirona M convertible car seats.
  • Why: The recall was initiated over concerns that a child can pick pieces of foam off the child seat headrest pad, leading to a choking hazard.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

CYBEX has issued a recall for the U.S. versions of its Sirona M convertible car seats over concerns pieces of foam can be picked off the child seat headrest pad and become a choking hazard.

The recall was initiated after product manufacturer Columbus Trading-Partners (CTP) “determined that a child can access the foam through a small opening in the headrest fabric that covers the foam headrest,” according to a recall report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

More than 20,000 of the CYBEX Sirona M convertible car seats are potentially affected, according to the car seat recall, including those with model numbers 518000385, 518002153, 518000387, 518002145, 518002149, 518002151 and 519000211.

The recalled CYBEX car seats were manufactured between Nov. 3, 2017, and Aug. 31, 2018, according to CTP, which says it has since “implemented an engineering change” that involved adding tape that prevents access to the foam.

CTP says that, while it has received reports of children being able to place a “small piece of foam” into their mouths, it has not heard of any instances of injury or choking related to the recall.

Issue Does Not Impact Seat’s ‘Crashworthiness,’ CYBEX Recall Says

The issue also does not impact the “crashworthiness of the seat, and the seat is in all other ways compliant” with safety standards, according to the car seat recall.

CTP says it will be mailing instructions to CYBEX product owners on how to seal the headrest foam so that it is no longer accessible to children.

Recall notification letters are expected to be mailed out to product owners and dealers between May 9 and May 23, according to the car seat recall.

Consumers with questions regarding the recall can contact CTP customer service directly by phone at 1-877-242-5676.

In related news, child car seat manufacturer Britax agreed to pay $2.6 million last month to resolve claims it sold child car seats prone to breaking in the event of an accident.
