Buick Regal recall overview:
- Who: General Motors is recalling more than 23,000 Buick Regal vehicles from model years 2018, 2019 and 2020
- Why: A software error in the braking system can cause the vehicles to take longer to brake, increasing the risk of a crash
- Where: United States
General Motors (GM) is recalling more than 23,000 Buick Regal vehicles as they may contain a software issue that causes them to brake less effectively, increasing the risk of a crash.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration posted the recall notice to its website June 30. The recall applies to 23,734 Buick Regal vehicles, model years 2018-2020.
According to the recall, the issue is a loss of power brake assist in the affected vehicles.
“In the event of a vacuum-power brake assist failure, a software error in the electronic brake control module may result in a loss of power brake assist,” the notice says.
“If the vehicle’s vacuum-power brake assist partially or fully fails, braking events may require additional stopping distance, depending on the brake pedal force applied by the driver. Increased stopping distances could increase the risk of a crash.”
Issue first discovered in April
GM was first alerted to the issue on April 28, the recall states. It opened a formal investigation on May 6.
GM’s supplier reviewed software files and determined that a software error in a file supplied by GM could cause the hydraulic-brake boost to fail to respond to a loss of brake-vacuum pressure.
The company conducted tests and reviewed field data from drivers. It said it has no information so far that the condition has caused a crash for any drivers so far.
GM is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
Drivers may have advanced warning of the issue if the vehicle displays a message in the Driver Information Center, a malfunction warning light illuminates, or the driver notices increased pedal resistance, the company said.
Dealers will update the software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 15.
Meanwhile, General Motors is facing a class action lawsuit alleging it fails to disclose a defect with the positive crank ventilation system (PCV) in their vehicles’ internal combustion engines.
At the same time, the company has issued a recall for the spare tire jacks on nearly 150,000 Buick Encore and Trailblazer SUVs after reports that they may splinter and even break while in use.
