Automobile recalls overview:

  • Who: Volvo initiated a vehicle recall in January. BMW of North America and Mercedes issued recalls in December.
  • Why: The automakers initiated the recalls over concerns around faulty brakes, engines and battery software.
  • Where: The automobile recalls were nationwide.

Volvo initiated a vehicle recall last month and BMW and Mercedes announced recalls in December over concerns including faulty brakes, engines and battery software.

An automaker may decide to conduct a recall if it discovers an issue that could potentially endanger drivers, passengers or others on the road or cause the vehicle to not work properly.

Ford was the automaker responsible for the most recalls last year with a total of 67 recalls affecting 8.6 million vehicles.

Volvo recalls more than 27,000 vehicles over brake support function concerns

Volvo announced a recall of more than 27,000 vehicles last month over concerns they may have reduced brake support functions, a problem that could increase the possibility of an accident.

The Volvo recall applies to the automaker’s model year 2023 C40 Recharge electric vehicles, S60 sedans, V60 Cross Country and V90 Cross Country wagons and XC40, XC60 and XC90 SUVs.

Volvo says it initiated the recall, which it will remedy with a free over-the-air software update, after discovering a diagnostic error that could prevent the vehicle’s brake control module from functioning correctly.

There have so far been no reports of injuries, deaths or accidents connected to the recall, according to Volvo.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published the recall notice on its website Jan. 19.

BMW recalls 14,000+ vehicles over defective high-voltage battery electric control unit software

BMW of North America, meanwhile, initiated a recall in December for more than 14,000 vehicles over concerns they were equipped with defective high-voltage battery electric control unit software.

The vehicles included in the BMW recall include its model year 2022-2023 iX xDrive40, iX xDrive50, iX M60, i4 eDrive35, i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50 and model year 2023 i7 xDrive60.

BMW says defective high-voltage battery electric control unit software could cause the recalled vehicles to suddenly lose electrical power while in use.

“If an interruption of electrical power occurs while driving, it may result in a brief loss of power, or stalling, which could increase the risk of a crash,” the BMW recall states.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published the recall notice on its website Dec. 20.

Mercedes announces recall of almost 324,000 vehicles over engine-stalling concerns

Mercedes initiated a recall in December for almost 324,000 of its model year 2012-2020 vehicles over concerns their engines could stall, increasing the risk of an accident.

The vehicles included in the Mercedes recall are model years 2012-2014 ML550, 2012-2015 ML350 and AMG ML63, 2015 ML250 and ML400, 2016 GLE450 and GLE300, 2016-2018 GLE350 and GLE550, 2016-2019 GLE400, 2017-2019 AMG GLE43 and 2016-2020 AMG GLE63 vehicles.

Mercedes says the potential issue is caused by water accumulating in the recalled vehicles’ spare tire wheel wells, ultimately causing damage to the vehicle’s fuel pump control unit.

To remedy the problem, dealers will install a water drain plug, inspect the vehicle’s wheel wells for water intrusion and, if necessary, replace the recalled vehicles’ fuel pump control unit.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published the recall notice on its website Dec. 23.
