BMW of North America has issued a recall more than 14,000 vehicles over concerns they are equipped with defective high-voltage battery electric control unit software that could interrupt electrical power to the vehicle.
The vehicles included in the BMW recall are model year 2022 and 2023 iX xDrive40, iX xDrive50, iX M60, i4 eDrive35, i4 eDrive40, i4 M50 and model year 2023 i7 xDrive60 vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA).
“If an interruption of electrical power occurs while driving, it may result in a brief loss of power, or stalling, which could increase the risk of a crash,” BMW stated in a safety recall report.
The driver would be able to turn the car back on to continue driving, however, according to the recall.
Automaker to conduct free update of battery software, BMW recall states
BMW says it plans to remedy the issue by conducting a free update of the high-voltage battery ECU software and expects to mail notification letters to vehicle owners by Feb. 10.
Vehicle owners who would like to contact BMW directly about the recall can contact the automaker by phone at 1-800-525-7417.
A consumer filed another class action lawsuit against BMW in June, arguing the company exaggerates the driving range ability of some of its i3 passenger vehicles when they are driven in cold weather.
