Ford rearview camera recall overview:

  • Who: Ford has announced it is expanding a prior recall to include a total of 462,000 vehicles that it is concerned are equipped with defective rearview cameras.
  • Why: Ford is concerned the rearview cameras can experience a video output failure, causing their camera images to not display.
  • Where: The Ford recall is worldwide.

Ford Motor Co. has expanded and replaced a prior recall to now include 462,000 of its vehicles sold worldwide over concerns they are equipped with defective 360-degree rearview cameras.

The recall affects some model year 2020 to 2023 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator vehicles, and model year 2020 to 2022 Lincoln Corsair vehicles equipped with 360-degree cameras, Reuters reported.

Ford reportedly said the recalled rearview cameras could experience a video output failure, which would prevent the display of camera images.

The automaker has received 17 reports of minor crashes connected to the recall, in addition to more than 2,100 warranty warranty reports, with no reports of injuries, reports Reuters.

Ford reportedly previously issued a recall — which the automaker has now expanded and replaced — in 2021 for a total of 228,000 vehicles.

The automaker said it plans to remedy the issue by having its dealers update their image processing module software, Reuters reported.

Ford vehicles fixed during the initial recall will have to receive another update with the current recall

Vehicles included in the initial recall and updated at that time will also have to receive the new update, according to the Ford recall.

Ford said it began an investigation that led to the recall expansion after it received notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it had reports of a blue image showing up in rearview camera displays following the completion of the initial 2021 recall, Reuters reported.

The NHTSA reportedly began an investigation in August 2021 — after Ford issued a recall for 620,426 of its vehicles following a separate issue with its rear cameras — to determine whether the automaker had recalled enough of its vehicles and done so quickly enough.

Ford announced it was recalling certain of its model year 2017 to 2020 F-Super Duty F-250, F-350, F-450 and 2017 to 2020 Lincoln Continental vehicles last August over concerns they may have been equipped with foggy rearview camera lenses.

  1. Lynda Enright says:

I have a 2020 Ford Explorer Platinum. I brought this issue to my dealership quite a long time befor any recall was announced. Brought my vehicle in for the recall ‘fix’ which did not work. I feel my car is unsafe, unreliable, and basically worthless as you cannot sell a vehicle you know is broken!

  2. Rebecca Rouse says:

I have a 2018 ford escape with only 28000 miles on it and the back up camera is already messed up

  3. Tamera Deboe says:

I have a 2014 Explorer. The camera screen is blue. It’s been like like that for almost a year now.

  4. Kim says:

I am having the same problem with my 2011 edge. The sync went out about a month ago.

  5. Bob Almy says:

I had a 2014 Ford Escape with an inverted rear camera image. And a current 2014 Ford Explorer with an intermittent camera blackout. The Gosch Ford dealership in Temecula, Ca stated they have problems fixing them, so they just replace the entire system and hope for the best. i traded in the Escape, and I’m living with the problem on the Explorer.

  6. Amber says:

I am wanting to also let u know that I’ve also got the problem with MY 2014 ford suv with my rearview camera!
