STIHL PolyCut Mowing Heads have been recalled due to concerns that the yard maintenance tools can come apart while being used, potentially causing injuries.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the voluntary recall on Sept. 5, 2019.
The STIHL PolyCut Mowing Heads have three orange plastic blades attached to a base with a bolt and nut each. The top of the base in black and the bottom is white.
Mowing heads like these can be used on yard maintenance devices for purposes such as lawn edging.
According to the agency, the bolts which hold the mowing head together and hold the plastic blades in place can come loose during use. This reportedly poses an injury risk to users and bystanders.
STIHL has reportedly received 28 reports of loose bolts of the mowing heads completely coming apart. Two of these reports included injuries.
Around 73,000 units are affected by this recall. Affected products can be identified by model number 27-3 or 47-3 on the original packaging or molded on the top side of the mowing head.
The STIHL PolyCut Mowing Heads were sold at authorized full line STIHL servicing dealers around the country from July 2018 to July 2019. The 27-3 model sold for around $30 while the 47-3 model sold for around $40.
If consumers purchased STIHL PolyCut Mowing Heads that are included in the recall, the CPSC urges consumers to stop using the products immediately. Consumers can take their affected mowing heads to an authorized STIHL dealer where they can receive a full refund.
If consumers have further questions about the recall, they can contact STIHL Inc. at 800-610-6677 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or through e-mail at stihlrecall@stihl.us. Information is also available on the STIHL website, under the “Products Recall” section.
While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) handles recalls of drugs and medical devices, the CPSC takes care of the recall of all other consumer products. The goal of the CPSC is to reduce consumer deaths, consumer injuries, and property damage caused by defective consumer products. They accomplish this in part by recalling dangerous items in partnership with manufacturers.
There have been several recalls lately which span numerous industries.
The CPSC recently announced the recall of two Kirkland’s dressers due to a risk of tip-over accidents. Dressers at risk for tipping over pose a large risk to children who may try to scale the front of the furniture pieces. According to the CPSC, one child dies every two weeks due to a tip-over accident and one person is injured every 15 minutes.
In late August, the CPSC also announced the recall of several Whirlpool glass cooktops. According to the regulator, these cooktops can turn on by themselves – potentially causing injury or starting fires.
In the same month, the CPSC announced that it would be recalling Piping Rock Wintergreen Essential Oil due to a poisoning risk. Wintergreen contains an active ingredient known as methyl salicylate which can be toxic and even fatal if swallowed. The Piping Rock essential oil allegedly lacks child-safe packaging, meaning that children could get a hold of the oil and poison themselves.
