whirlpool glass cooktop recallWhirlpool recently recalled several glass cooktops due to concerns that the appliances can turn on by themselves, leading to burns and fires.

On Aug. 28, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the Whirlpool recall in conjunction with Health Canada and Gobierno de Mexico.

Around 26,300 units that were sold in the U.S. are included in the recall, along with 2,800 units sold in Canada and 128 units sold in Mexico.

Whirlpool reportedly received 133 incident reports regarding the glass cooktops turning on by themselves. In 14 reports, including 13 reports from the U.S. and 1 from Canada, the heat from the cooktop damaged nearby items. Four reports involved items catching on fire and one report involved property damage. Two minor burn injuries have reportedly been caused by the recalled Whirlpool cooktops.

The recall includes 17 glass cooktops models with touch controls from the Radiant and Downdraft Radiant product lines sold under the Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and JennAir brands.

The Radiant model numbers are included in the recall reportedly begin with KCES950HSS, KCES950HBL, KCES956HSS, KCES956HBL, WCE97US0HS, WCE97US0HB, WCE97US6HS, WCE97US6HB, JEC4430HS, JEC4430HB, JEC4536HS, JEC4536HB, and JEC4424HB.

The Downdraft Radiant models are included in the recall reportedly begin with JED4430GB, JED4536GB, JED4430GS, and JED4536GS.

The KitchenAid models begin with a K, the Whirlpool models begin with a W, and the JennAir models begin with a J.

Consumers can find the brand name of their cooktop printed on the appliance while the model number and serial numbers can be found on the cooktop’s underside.

The products affected by the Whirlpool cooktop recall were reportedly manufactured between December 2016 and July 2019.

Consumers may have purchased the appliances from Lowe’s, The Home Depot, Best Buy, other home improvement stores, appliance stores, and online vendors between March 2017 and August 2019. The appliances reportedly cost between $1,150 and $2,500.

Consumers who purchased the affected Whirlpool cooktops can contact the company for a free replacement. The company will also provide free installation of the new replacement cooktop. The CPSC recommends that consumers “immediately” contact the company for a replacement.

While consumers are waiting to have their cooktop replaced, the CPSC recommends that they use caution to prevent any injuries to consumers or damage to property.

“When not in use, turn the unit off at the circuit breaker,” the CPSC warns. “Do not leave flammable materials or empty cookware on or near the cooktop.”

If consumers have questions about the Whirlpool cooktop recall, they can call 888-900-7897 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.

More recall and repair information is also available on the Whirlpool’s recall website. Information is reportedly also available on the KitchenAid and JennAir websites under their “Recall Information” pages located at the bottom of the home page.

The CPSC is the United State’s chief consumer protection agency and is responsible for organizing and overseeing the recall of dangerous or defective products. Health Canada and Gobierno de Mexico play a similar role in their respective countries.

UPDATE: On Nov. 20, 2019, although Whirlpool recently recalled their glass cooktops due to a defect, a class action claims that the company should provide consumers with monetary compensation as well.
