kirkland's chest of drawersKirkland’s recently recalled two chests of drawers due to concerns that the dressers are at risk for tip-over accidents.

On Aug. 28, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Kirkland’s voluntarily recalled two chests of drawers sold in their stores: The Design House Black Wash Mirrored Chests and Crestview Collection Six-Drawer Camille Chests.

According to the regulator, these chests may be unstable if they are not sufficiently anchored to the wall. This can reportedly result in tip-over and entrapment hazards which could lead to children being injured or even being killed.

No injuries have been reported, but Kirkland’s is recalling the dressers for consumer safety.

Tip-over risks pose serious danger to children. According to the CPSC, one child dies every two weeks and one person is injured every 15 minutes due to a tip-over accident. Most dresser tip-over incidences involve children who have attempted to climb the face of the dresser, resulting in the dressers tipping forward on top of them.

Voluntary industry standards aim to curb the tip-over risk in dressers, but consumer safety advocates have argued that stricter standards should be required.

Currently, advocates such as Consumer Reports are urging lawmakers to pass the Stop Tip-overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth (STURDY) Act. This federal law would implement mandatory safety standards for dressers that are stronger than the current voluntary standards for the industry.

Because the Black Wash Mirrored Chests and Six-Drawer Camille Chests pose a tip-over risk, they reportedly fail to adhere with voluntary industry standards. The CPSC urges consumers to stop using the dressers and to place them in a room where children cannot access them.

Around 3,000 units are affected by the recall. The dressers were sold for around $200 in Kirkland’s store and online from January 2016 to May 2019.

The Black Wash Mirrored Chests have five mirrored drawers and a black wash finish, measure 35 inches tall, and weigh around 47 pounds. The SKU number for this dresser is 177373.

The Camille Chests have six drawers and a cream distressed finished, measure 36 inches tall, and weigh around 75 pounds. The SKU for this chest of drawers is 145191.

The SKU number can be found on the Kirkland’s price label attached to the back of the dressers. If consumers have removed this tag and are unsure whether or not their products are affected, they can contact Kirkland’s for help.

Kirkland’s will reportedly be refunding or repairing affected dressers. If consumers choose a refund, they can return their affected chest to a Kirkland’s store in order to receive their money back.

If consumers would instead like to repair their chest of drawers, Kirkland’s will send them a free tip-over restraint kit. Consumers can have a professional come to their home for free to install the kit.

Kirkland’s customers with further questions about the recall can contact Kirkland’s at 877-541-4855 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, or through email at customer.care@kirklands.com. More information is also available on the Kirkland’s dresser recall website.
