Toyota RAV4 Fuel Capacity Texas Class Action Settlement Overview:

  • Who: Drivers with certain 2019, 2020 and 2021 RAV4 Hybrid vehicles have reached a class action settlement with Toyota.
  • Why: The drivers allege Toyota advertises the cars have 14.5-gallon fuel tanks but actually only hold 10 gallons. Toyota has reached a settlement to end the claims in this case.
  • Where: The drivers represent a nationwide class.

Toyota has reached a deal with a group of drivers that alleges certain Toyota 2019, 2020 and 2021 RAV4 Hybrid vehicles are advertised as having 14.5-gallon fuel tanks when owners can only add 10 gallons to the tank.

The automaker has agreed, as part of the settlement, to provide an Extended Customer Support Program to all eligible class members, including free repair of the fuel tank issue, Legal Scoops reports.

The settlement comes after drivers first sued Toyota Motor Sales in a Texas federal court Feb. 13, 2020.

The drivers alleged that Toyota advertises the fuel tank in certain RAV4 Hybrid vehicles as having a capacity of 14.5 gallons and a range of 580 miles. However, even when nearly empty, owners cannot add over 10 gallons of fuel before the automatic shut-off engages and stops the pump from filling the tank further, they claimed.

The case was originally brought on behalf of a class of owners and lessees of certain 2019, 2020 and 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid vehicles and 2021 RAV4 Prime vehicles who live in Missouri and California but was recently amended to include owners of all such cars nationwide.

Other Toyota Lawsuits Regarding Fuel Tank Capacity Continue

Despite this settlement, the deal does not resolve or provide a release for claims related to the actual capacity of the vehicles’ fuel tanks. Those claims are still being examined in the courts, through another class action lawsuit filed in a California federal court

The plaintiffs in that case filed objections to the above settlement to ensure the settlement does not challenge claims of the actual fuel tank capacity of those vehicles asserted in the California case.

Under the settlement, Toyota will offer an Extended Customer Support Program to all class members who believe that their fuel tank experiences the fuel tank capacity issue.

Plaintiffs will get free inspections of the fuel tank and fuel sender gauge unit and a free repair if a problem exists. They will also get a free loan vehicle if necessary.

The program will also increase the original Customer Support Program by seven years and 50,000 miles for a total coverage period of 15 years from the date the vehicle was initially sold/leased or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first, on original parts.

Toyota will also pay fees, costs, expenses and awards to named plaintiffs.

  1. DD says:

My 2019 XLE Hybrid barely holds 10 gallons. I had the replacement done by the dealer – NO Difference.
Just so everyone is aware, their “fix” does not work.
And Toyota case managers are only there to tell you that nothing is wrong. So that’s it. there’s nothing else we can do.
Luckily, the car does get fantastic mpg.. I’ve seen 45mpg in city driving. It’s only the range that is affected.

  2. Mike Souriya says:

I’m experiencing the same issue with my 2019 hybrid xse. Only allow me to filled up to 10 or 11 gallons. I’m very disappointed. I purchased it cause of the advertisement 14.5 gallons and 580 miles.

  3. Brett says:

How do we join this settlement? My 2021 Hybrid only fills to 430 and dealership is claiming this is normal. The tank clearly should hold more based on advertising capacity

  4. Gregory Chastain says:

My 2019 Hybrid XSE has the same problem. I knew of this before buying the car but the salesperson lied and said it had been fixed.

  5. Yaroslav Hamuha says:

    Add me as well. Thanks.

  6. Yaroslav Hamuha says:

I have 2020 XSE Rav4 Hybrid and have the same. I was thinking that it should be so in some Toyota’s reason but now when I see this complains understand that it is an issue. I hope, Toyota able to recall and fix it. A little frustrating, honestly.

  7. M Bell says:

I have a 2020 rav4 xse hybrid and was only able to get 350 miles to a full tank of gas. I just took it into my dealership Burien Toyota in Washington State. They replaced the gas tank and a few other parts. When I picked it up they filled the gas tank completely full and the gauge only said 430 miles to empty. It’s still a far cry from 580 miles like promised. So I’m thinking of taking it back next week to complain again. I paid $47,000 for my used RAV4 with 16,300 miles on it, way more than buying a new one. Only reason I was willing to pay this high price is because no Toyota dealership have any new hybrid vehicles for sale at the moment. And you would have to put a non refundable deposit of $1000 to special order a new hybrid and it would take between 6-12 months to get it.

    1. Samantha Evans says:

I had to buy an inflated prices new one too. I get it

  8. AL says:

I’m having the same issues with my 2020 Rav4 XSE hybrid.
Have gone to the dealer 3 times about this issue.
replaced the fuel tank once. no fix????

  9. Daniel M Wisckol says:

I own a 2020 RAV 4 XSE Hybrid and my tank only fills to 10.2 gallons when completely empty, I only get 384 miles range on a full tank. I would like a reference to the Class Action lawsuit and who to contact to force the dealership to fix my issues. Thus far, dealer claims everything is normal when I clearly should have 14.5 gallons per tank.

  10. Humzah mughal says:

I got a 2020 hybrid Xse rav4 and i only get 10 to 10.5 gallons. I was promised 580 miles, but i only get 384 miles. Please add me to that list.
