Toyota RAV4 Fuel Capacity Texas Class Action Settlement Overview:

  • Who: Drivers with certain 2019, 2020 and 2021 RAV4 Hybrid vehicles have reached a class action settlement with Toyota.
  • Why: The drivers allege Toyota advertises the cars have 14.5-gallon fuel tanks but actually only hold 10 gallons. Toyota has reached a settlement to end the claims in this case.
  • Where: The drivers represent a nationwide class.

Toyota has reached a deal with a group of drivers that alleges certain Toyota 2019, 2020 and 2021 RAV4 Hybrid vehicles are advertised as having 14.5-gallon fuel tanks when owners can only add 10 gallons to the tank.

The automaker has agreed, as part of the settlement, to provide an Extended Customer Support Program to all eligible class members, including free repair of the fuel tank issue, Legal Scoops reports.

The settlement comes after drivers first sued Toyota Motor Sales in a Texas federal court Feb. 13, 2020.

The drivers alleged that Toyota advertises the fuel tank in certain RAV4 Hybrid vehicles as having a capacity of 14.5 gallons and a range of 580 miles. However, even when nearly empty, owners cannot add over 10 gallons of fuel before the automatic shut-off engages and stops the pump from filling the tank further, they claimed.

The case was originally brought on behalf of a class of owners and lessees of certain 2019, 2020 and 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid vehicles and 2021 RAV4 Prime vehicles who live in Missouri and California but was recently amended to include owners of all such cars nationwide.

Other Toyota Lawsuits Regarding Fuel Tank Capacity Continue

Despite this settlement, the deal does not resolve or provide a release for claims related to the actual capacity of the vehicles’ fuel tanks. Those claims are still being examined in the courts, through another class action lawsuit filed in a California federal court

The plaintiffs in that case filed objections to the above settlement to ensure the settlement does not challenge claims of the actual fuel tank capacity of those vehicles asserted in the California case.

Under the settlement, Toyota will offer an Extended Customer Support Program to all class members who believe that their fuel tank experiences the fuel tank capacity issue.

Plaintiffs will get free inspections of the fuel tank and fuel sender gauge unit and a free repair if a problem exists. They will also get a free loan vehicle if necessary.

The program will also increase the original Customer Support Program by seven years and 50,000 miles for a total coverage period of 15 years from the date the vehicle was initially sold/leased or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first, on original parts.

Toyota will also pay fees, costs, expenses and awards to named plaintiffs.

  1. Samantha Evans says:

Same issue with my 2020 RAV hybrid. Just went in today and they said 9.8 gallons or above is normal. They say the “fix” is only for anything under that.

  2. Tony V says:

I have a 2020 RAV4 Hybrid XSE and also only get approx. 360-380 miles per tank. Only fills to approx. 10 Gallons when completely empty.

    1. XP L. says:

I have a 2020 RAV4 Hybrid XLE. Same problem. I can get to only about 10 gals /435 miles range. Two trips to the dealer. No Fix but some BS – “nothing wrong”, “there are 2.5 gals reserved gas”, …

  3. James Wenzke says:

I have the same issue with a 2021

I have the sme issue with a 2021 RAV4 prime. I cannot understand how the settlement can allow Toyota to continue to advertise that the vehicle tank holds 14.5 gallons and the range is near 580 miles. that is an openly fraudulent claim and I can’t understand how the court will allow it.

  4. Allison says:

I have a 2021 RAV4 Hybrid XLE and since owning this vehicle I have tracked every trip to the gas station and recorded the amount of gas and the odometer reading at each fueling. I can assure you I’ve never been able to fill my RAV4 more than 10.5 gallons without the pump auto stopping even when I’ve run the car close to empty. I am very disappointed that the fuel range is not what was advertised since that was the major selling point that swayed me to buy this car over a standard SUV. How do I join this settlement?

  5. wang says:

    I have a 2019Toyota rav4 hybrid,ONLY up to 10gallon,the same problem

  6. JMurphy says:

We are experiencing the same with our 2020 RAV4 Hybrid. Repeat multiple day shop trips and no improvement. Lucky if we get 10g. We are told a friend in CA, had theirs fixed by the dealer right away. Ughh.

  7. Michael Camarlinghi says:

Toyota claims that they fixed my 2019 RAV4, however I am not close to the 14.5 gallons & 580 mile Range. As a commuter this was a main selling point for me buying this vehicle.

  8. Shelby says:

There is no way my take is 14Gal.

  9. David Johnson says:

I also need added I don’t understand how they can advertise a car to get 580 miles on a tank but only if you fill it up incorrectly and drive way past it says it’s empty

  10. Gary R Schaecher says:

Another 2020 RAV4 Hybrid owner not able to add more than 10.5 gallons after empty light comes on. Range is no more than 360 miles. I e owned 4 Toyotas over the last 25 years. Probably my last! Very disappointed by both dealer and Toyota response. Add me to your list!
