Hyundai recall overview:

  • Who: Hyundai is recalling 31,440 of its 2021-2023 Genesis vehicles.
  • Why: The Hyundai Genesis fuel pump assembly contains an impeller that can deform under high heat and cause the fuel pump to shut down.
  • Where: The Hyundai Genesis recall is valid across the United States.

Hyundai is recalling 31,440 of its 2021-2023 Genesis vehicles due to fuel pump assembly issues that can cause an impeller to deform under high heat and the fuel pump to shut down.

The Hyundai Genesis recall includes 12,763 model year 2022-2023 Genesis GV70, 14,414 2021-2023 Genesis GV80, 2,899 2021-2023 Genesis G80 and 1,364 2022-2023 Genesis G90 vehicles.

The low-pressure Genesis fuel pump assembly includes an impeller that can deform under high ambient temperature, leading to interference with the fuel pump housing, resulting in a mechanical resistance that could lead to a shutdown of the fuel pump, the Hyundai Genesis recall says.

A shutdown can restrict fuel flow to the engine, resulting in a sudden reduction or loss of power, increasing the risk of a crash according to the recall. The fuel pump was manufactured by Korean supplier Hyundam, the company says.

Material used to build faulty impeller changed in September 2022

Hyundai did not say if it has not received any reports of injury related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

The raw material used for impeller construction changed in September 2022, according to the Genesis fuel pump defect recall.

Hyundai will send notice via mail on June 18 for vehicle owners to bring their vehicles to a Genesis retailer to inspect and replace the low-pressure fuel pump assembly at no cost.

Hyundai vehicle owners will also be eligible for reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses already paid related to the recall. Hyundai North America can be reached at 800-633-5151.

A recent Hyundai class action lawsuit claims the paint and clear coat on its Hyundai Genesis line of vehicles prematurely weakens and peels off.
