Toyota RAV4 Fuel Capacity Texas Class Action Settlement Overview:

  • Who: Drivers with certain 2019, 2020 and 2021 RAV4 Hybrid vehicles have reached a class action settlement with Toyota.
  • Why: The drivers allege Toyota advertises the cars have 14.5-gallon fuel tanks but actually only hold 10 gallons. Toyota has reached a settlement to end the claims in this case.
  • Where: The drivers represent a nationwide class.

Toyota has reached a deal with a group of drivers that alleges certain Toyota 2019, 2020 and 2021 RAV4 Hybrid vehicles are advertised as having 14.5-gallon fuel tanks when owners can only add 10 gallons to the tank.

The automaker has agreed, as part of the settlement, to provide an Extended Customer Support Program to all eligible class members, including free repair of the fuel tank issue, Legal Scoops reports.

The settlement comes after drivers first sued Toyota Motor Sales in a Texas federal court Feb. 13, 2020.

The drivers alleged that Toyota advertises the fuel tank in certain RAV4 Hybrid vehicles as having a capacity of 14.5 gallons and a range of 580 miles. However, even when nearly empty, owners cannot add over 10 gallons of fuel before the automatic shut-off engages and stops the pump from filling the tank further, they claimed.

The case was originally brought on behalf of a class of owners and lessees of certain 2019, 2020 and 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid vehicles and 2021 RAV4 Prime vehicles who live in Missouri and California but was recently amended to include owners of all such cars nationwide.

Other Toyota Lawsuits Regarding Fuel Tank Capacity Continue

Despite this settlement, the deal does not resolve or provide a release for claims related to the actual capacity of the vehicles’ fuel tanks. Those claims are still being examined in the courts, through another class action lawsuit filed in a California federal court.

The plaintiffs in that case filed objections to the above settlement to ensure the settlement does not challenge claims of the actual fuel tank capacity of those vehicles asserted in the California case.

Under the settlement, Toyota will offer an Extended Customer Support Program to all class members who believe that their fuel tank experiences the fuel tank capacity issue.

Plaintiffs will get free inspections of the fuel tank and fuel sender gauge unit and a free repair if a problem exists. They will also get a free loan vehicle if necessary.

The program will also increase the original Customer Support Program by seven years and 50,000 miles for a total coverage period of 15 years from the date the vehicle was initially sold/leased or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first, on original parts.

Toyota will also pay fees, costs, expenses and awards to named plaintiffs.

I got a 2020 hybrid Xse rav4 and i only get 10 to 10.5 gallons. I was promised 580 miles, but i only get 384 miles. Please add me to that list.

  2. Sanjala Das says:

I purchased a 2021 Rav4 prime XSE, I can only fill up to 10 gallons and the total range is 400. Toyota is certainly misleading customers with the false advertisements of 14.5 gal tank size and a range of 600.
Took it to the dealership 2 times with no result and they made me look like a fool, explaining that everything is normal . Certainly, I have read some people posting comments that the Rav4’s are giving them 600 miles. so there are faulty gas tanks and Toyota knows about it, but not taking any action.
There should be a big lawsuit and hold them accountable. Please add me to the list.

  3. W Belt says:

I own a 2019 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid and have never gotten much over 400 miles on a full take of gas. I do plenty of freeway driving. I actually filled my tank up this morning and it was a little over 5 gallons . I guess I really do not have a 15 gallon tank now do I… SMH.

  4. Sheila says:

I have a 21’ RAV4 Prime and have the same issue, told the dealership and they said it’s the way I drive and that my MPG’s are stellar so what’s the issue? I’m not glad other people are experiencing the same thing but glad I’m not crazy for thinking something is wrong.

I have had the same issue with my 2019 RAV4 hybrid limited. The fuel tank, fuel sending unit, to include filler tube/gasket have been replaced two times. So vehicle is essentially on the third fuel tank with no resolution to problem. Vehicle only takes anywhere from 9 to 11 gallons. Toyota continues to tell me that nothing is wrong with this vehicle. This fuel tank issue is very frustrating as if I would’ve known this would’ve been a problem I would’ve purchased the gas only model. If you call Toyota customer support they just give you a case number and don’t attempt or really care what the resolution is. They route you to dealerships who have to diagnose the problem who all refuse to identify or acknowledge that there is a problem.

Being that my tank has been replaced two times and my case is well documented as soon as the dealership read the notes they want nothing to do with my vehicle.

  6. Chuck Kendrick says:

My 2020 RAV4 Hybrid has the same issue. I can only put in 10.5 gallons when the fuel gauge reads empty. Toyota of Surprise, Az has already replaced the sensor and they claim that’s all they can do. Very dissatisfied with how they’ve handled the problem. It appears the only fix is a different shaped gas tank. As it is now I have four gallons in the tank that can’t be accessed. It seems that the only customers who say the problem is fixed are those that have had the tank replaced.

  7. Jared Bisher says:

    Jredvw
I have this issue also 2021. Even when the car says there is only 10 miles left to drive I can only put 12.001 gallons before it’s full

  8. Diesel says:

Same for me. I purchased a 2019 Rav4 Limited Hybrid and took it back to dealership 3 times, swapped tanks, sending units and vent tube. Still have the same issue, not able to get more than 10.5 gallons in the tank. You can add me as well. Seems we are all getting the same answer from our dealerships. I was also told by the techs the the tank flexes and I asked if the inside of the tank has some type of blivit internally to the tank outer shell. Did not get an answer on that.

  9. Mark Kempen says:

Let’s keep perspective, my ’22 Prime is a wonderful car but it clearly has this issue. It’s suppose to go 500 miles on a tank of gas, but the ‘low fuel’ warning comes on at about 340 highway miles. After 20 miles with the warning, it only takes 10.6 gallons of gas. 500 vrs 340? 14.5 vrs 10.6? These numbers aren’t what they advertise.

  10. Diane says:

I have the same problem and the dealership has twice claimed to fix the problem but it is not fixed. I have the 2020 RAV4 hybrid and am disappointed in the dealer’s response.
