Toyota RAV4 Fuel Capacity Texas Class Action Settlement Overview:

  • Who: Drivers with certain 2019, 2020 and 2021 RAV4 Hybrid vehicles have reached a class action settlement with Toyota.
  • Why: The drivers allege Toyota advertises the cars have 14.5-gallon fuel tanks but actually only hold 10 gallons. Toyota has reached a settlement to end the claims in this case.
  • Where: The drivers represent a nationwide class.

Toyota has reached a deal with a group of drivers that alleges certain Toyota 2019, 2020 and 2021 RAV4 Hybrid vehicles are advertised as having 14.5-gallon fuel tanks when owners can only add 10 gallons to the tank.

The automaker has agreed, as part of the settlement, to provide an Extended Customer Support Program to all eligible class members, including free repair of the fuel tank issue, Legal Scoops reports.

The settlement comes after drivers first sued Toyota Motor Sales in a Texas federal court Feb. 13, 2020.

The drivers alleged that Toyota advertises the fuel tank in certain RAV4 Hybrid vehicles as having a capacity of 14.5 gallons and a range of 580 miles. However, even when nearly empty, owners cannot add over 10 gallons of fuel before the automatic shut-off engages and stops the pump from filling the tank further, they claimed.

The case was originally brought on behalf of a class of owners and lessees of certain 2019, 2020 and 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid vehicles and 2021 RAV4 Prime vehicles who live in Missouri and California but was recently amended to include owners of all such cars nationwide.

Other Toyota Lawsuits Regarding Fuel Tank Capacity Continue

Despite this settlement, the deal does not resolve or provide a release for claims related to the actual capacity of the vehicles’ fuel tanks. Those claims are still being examined in the courts, through another class action lawsuit filed in a California federal court.

The plaintiffs in that case filed objections to the above settlement to ensure the settlement does not challenge claims of the actual fuel tank capacity of those vehicles asserted in the California case.

Under the settlement, Toyota will offer an Extended Customer Support Program to all class members who believe that their fuel tank experiences the fuel tank capacity issue.

Plaintiffs will get free inspections of the fuel tank and fuel sender gauge unit and a free repair if a problem exists. They will also get a free loan vehicle if necessary.

The program will also increase the original Customer Support Program by seven years and 50,000 miles for a total coverage period of 15 years from the date the vehicle was initially sold/leased or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first, on original parts.

Toyota will also pay fees, costs, expenses and awards to named plaintiffs.

77 thoughts onToyota Reaches Settlement With RAV4 Hybrid Owners Over Fuel Tank Issue

  1. Tammy Wigginton says:

My RAV4 2019 Hybrid has done this since day one. The last two times I’ve only been able to put a little over six gallons in the tank. They need to recall them.

  2. Jayne C says:

Add me as a PRIME owner who had 1 mile range left today and only 9.8 gallons filled the tank.

    1. Shawn P says:

I just got off the phone with Toyota corporate. They admit that the Prime models aren’t included in the original lawsuit. Most likely because there weren’t enough of them out on the road at that time to see there was an issue.

My Prime will be inspected next week. If it’s concluded it’s the same issue as the other models, Toyota will ammend the court filing to include Prime owners. However, a new lawsuit might have to be filed if the problems are different I was told.

It’ funny how Toyota didn’t respond until I forwarded them an email I sent to an attorny about getting a new class action lawsuit going. Oh well.

      1. Karla says:

It won’t even help after they switch the part , they switched mine last year and is not working still

  3. Sid says:

Hi, I own a 2021 Rav 4 Prime and have been only able to fill ~10 gallons of fuel since the time I bought the vehicle

    1. David Johnson says:

Please add me too I have a new rav4 and can only put 10 gallons in just left the dealership and they say no problem some bs about the fuel pump is liquid cooled and there is a reserve every fuel pump is liquid cooled

  4. Janelle says:

Yeah mine was reading 500 miles till empty when I bought it. But now I fill it, the most I’ve seen is 425 miles.

    1. Andy says:

i had my tank replaced. I was only getting like 320 miles per tank. Now I get about 430. Mine also read over 500 when purchased. Not impressed. They will give you some nonsense answer that you drive too agressively. Never had an issue like this with any other car.

      1. Courtney says:

Mine was supposed to have had the sending unit replaced still shuts off at 10 max ever is 11. It read close to 500 right after but usually 460-480 range.

  5. Denny Lindsay says:

My 20 Rave Hybrid has done this since coming off the lot. I can go 100 miles when it hits empty and the light comes on. Add me too.

  6. Heather J says:

I have a 2020 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid. It never refills over 10 gallons. I have been to the dealership for the issue and was told my VIN was not part of the service campaign and therefore could not be repaired.

    1. Andy says:

Keep harassing them. I had to go in at least 3 times before they ‘found’ the problem.

  7. Shawn P says:

I spoke to Dereke H who is the brand center supervisor at Toyota. He said that the only way Toyota will not honor the class action lawsuit on 2021 Rav4 Prime even though it’s a known issue. He told me that Prime owners will need to file a new lawsuit.

  8. Kristina Cox says:

I have a 2021 Toyota Rav 4. Mine is having the same issue. I can be on empty with 0 miles to go and my rav 4 will only take 12 gallons. Then when I’m full my distance to empty reads 450 miles to empty. One day I was completely empty and it clicked off a after 2 gallons and it wouldn’t stop shutting off the gas station pump. Attendant had to keep pulling the trigger.

  9. Shawn P says:

I have a 2021 Rav4 Prime. I called Toyota two months ago telling them I can only put 10 gallons of fuel in when it’s on empty. They seemed surprised at the issue. I read this article on 1/20 and called Toyota immediately. They are telling me that the Rav4 Prime isn’t included. Leave a post here if your a laywer/law firm interested in taking this case

    1. don copeland says:

They told me the same. Yet I do know that other Prime owner’s gas tanks were swapped by the dealers. I’m curious to know if we are covered.

      1. Mel says:

I am also a prime owner and only able to fill 10.8ish max. We all need to start a lawsuit.

  10. JJ says:

    Please add me
