Automakers Ford, Toyota, Subaru and Kia initiated vehicle recalls in March and April over a variety of safety concerns.
The vehicle recalls involve a fire risk, unlocked doors opening while the vehicle is in motion, front passenger airbags failing to deploy and vehicles rolling away after the driver engages the parking brake.
An automaker may choose to initiate a recall if it determines the vehicle contains a defect that endangers drivers, passengers, pedestrians and/or other vehicles on the roadway.
Ford recalls Bronco Sport, Escape, Maverick vehicles in April
Ford Motor Co. issued a recall for 42,642 of its model year 2022-2023 Ford Bronco Sport and model year 2022 Ford Escape vehicles last month over concerns they contain defective fuel injectors.
The automaker says fuel injectors in the recalled Ford Bronco Sport and Ford Escape vehicles could crack and leak fuel inside the engine compartment, creating a fire risk.
“A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components, can increase the risk of a fire,” the recall states.
Ford also issued a recall for 456,565 of its model year 2021-2024 Ford Bronco Sport and model year 2022-2023 Ford Maverick vehicles in April over concerns they could lose drive power as a result of a defective body and powertrain control module.
The automaker says it is concerned the body and powertrain control modules in the recalled Ford Bronco Sport and Ford Maverick vehicles could fail to detect a charging change involving the 12-volt battery.
“An undetected low battery charge can result in a loss of electrical accessories such as hazard lights or cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash,” the recall states.
Toyota recalls more than 200k Prius, Prius Prime vehicles over concerns unlocked doors could open while driving
Toyota issued a recall for 211,000 of its model year 2023-2024 Prius and Prius Prime vehicles last month over concerns a defect could cause unlocked doors to open while the vehicle is in motion.
The automaker says it is concerned water could enter the electronic rear door latches on the recalled Prius and Prius Prime vehicles, causing unlocked doors to malfunction and open during driving.
The recall impacts 55,000 Toyota Prius and Prius Prime vehicles in the United States with the remaining affected vehicles in Japan, Europe, Asia and the rest of North America, according to the recall.
Subaru recalls Outback vehicles over potential front passenger air bag defect
Subaru of America issued a recall for 118,723 of its model year 2020-2022 Outback SUVs and Legacy four-door vehicles in March over concerns they may have defective front passenger air bag sensors.
The automaker says it is concerned a capacitor in the recalled vehicles’ front passenger air bag sensor could crack and short circuit, preventing the front passenger air bag from being deployed during an accident.
“The front passenger airbag may not deploy in certain crashes as designed, increasing the risk of injury to an occupant in the seat,” the Subaru recall states.
427,000+ Kia Telluride vehicles recalled over rollaway concerns
Kia issued a recall for more than 427,000 of its model year 2020-2024 Kia Telluride vehicles in March over concerns a mechanical issue could cause them to move even if their parking brake is engaged.
The automaker says it is concerned the mechanical issues on the recalled Kia Telluride vehicles could manifest over time as a result of improper supplier assembly.
Consumers who own the recalled Kia vehicles may hear a grinding noise and/or reduce motive power, according to the recall.
