August vehicle recalls overview:

  • Who: Chrysler, Toyota, Subaru, Ferrari, Kia, Hyundai, GM and Ford initiated vehicle recalls last month.
  • Why: The recalls were made over a variety of safety concerns, including faulty seat belts, defective rear view cameras and fire risks, among other things.
  • Where: The recalls are nationwide.

A number of major car companies issued recalls for their vehicles in August over a variety of different safety concerns, including faulty seat belts, defective cameras and loose ceiling plates, among other things.

An automobile manufacturer may initiate a vehicle recall in the event they discover something about the vehicle which, if not remedied, could pose a safety risk to drivers, passengers and/or pedestrians.

Chrysler issues recall for several vehicles built with faulty Tire Pressure Monitoring System sensors

Chrysler initiated a recall for certain model year 2022 Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger, and Chrysler 300 vehicles over concerns they were built with faulty sensors which fail to alert a driver if their tire pressure is low.

The recall was issued after Chrysler discovered that the sensor battery for the vehicles’ Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) can stop working prematurely, causing it to stop working.

Inoperative TPMS sensors will not alert the driver to low tire pressure,” states the Chrysler recall notice.

Toyota, Subaru recall vehicles over collective airbag, wheel, and lamp switch concerns

Also last month, Toyota announced it recalled more than 4,000 of its vehicles over concerns surrounding the safety of their wheels or airbags

Vehicles recalled due to concerns their front airbags won’t deploy properly included more than 3,500 of Toyota’s model year 2022 gas-powered Rav4, Rav4 Hybrid and Rav4 Prime plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Toyota also recalled a total of 661 model year 2023 Subaru Solterra and Toyota bZ4X vehicles over concerns that their wheels could detach.

“A wheel detaching from a moving vehicle can result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash,” the Toyota safety recall states.

Subaru also recalled nearly 60,000 of its model year 2015-2021 WRX STI vehicles last month over concerns they could contain a defective backup lamp switch

The safety recall only affected Subaru 2015-2021 WRX STI vehicles produced from Nov. 14, 2013, to Oct. 21, 2021.

“If the backup lights do not illuminate when the vehicle is in reverse gear, this may reduce the awareness of other motorists or road users of the driver’s intention to operate the vehicle in reverse, increasing the risk of a crash,” the Subaru recall states.

Ferrari recalls all vehicles sold in the U.S. since 2005 over faulty brake fluid reservoir caps

Ferrari, meanwhile, issued a recall last month for every vehicle the company has sold in the United States since 2005.

The luxury car manufacturer initiated the recall over concerns their vehicles may have been fitted with faulty brake fluid reservoir caps

The issue can potentially cause brake fluid to leak out and eventually lead to the brake reservoir running dry, leading to brake failure, according to the Ferrari recall.

“Upon total loss of brake fluid, the vehicle would lose braking capability, which may result in injury or death to vehicle occupants,” the Ferrari recall states.

Kia, Hyundai recall vehicles over loose ceiling plates, fire risk

Also last month, Kia announced it recalled more than 250,000 of its model year 2012-2013 Kia Optima vehicles over concerns they may have been outfitted with headliner ceiling plates, which can detach in the event of an accident

Kia says it was concerned that the ceiling plates could injure the vehicle’s occupants in the event they fell off during an accident.

A plate that detaches during a crash may strike an occupant, increasing their risk of injury,” the Kia recall states.

Kia, along with Hyundai, also recalled more than 281,000 vehicles last month over concerns they could short circuit and catch on fire while either being driven or parked.

The auto manufacturers had previously recalled almost 500,000 vehicles in February over similar concerns.

The most recent recall, meanwhile, involves more than 245,000 model year 2020-2022 Hyundai Palisade vehicles and 36,417 model year 2020-2022 Kia Telluride vehicles.

In addition to the recall, the companies issued a “stop sale” for affected vehicles that have not yet been sold from dealerships and vehicle processing centers.

Kia and Hyundai have asked owners of the recalled vehicles to park them outside and away from any structures just in case they spontaneously catch on fire.

GM recalls more than 480,000 vehicles over faulty seat belt concerns

GM, meanwhile, recalled more than 480,000 of certain model year 2021-2022 Cadillac Escalade, Cadillac Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon and GMC Yukon XL vehicles containing third-row seats.

The GM safety recall was initiated after the company became concerned that the third-row seats in the vehicles may contain faulty seat belts that may not properly restrain a passenger in the event of an accident.

“The rivet that retains the buckle to the mounting bracket in the left or right side third-row seat belt buckle assembly may have been improperly formed,” the GM safety recall states.

Ford initiates recall over defective rear view camera concerns

Also last month, Ford announced it recalled more than 277,000 vehicles over concerns they may have been built with rearview cameras with cloudy lenses

Ford said it is concerned that the cloudy lenses on the rearview cameras can reduce rear visibility and increase the risk of an accident.

“Lack of a clear rear view camera image can reduce the driver’s visibility of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash,” the Ford recall states.

The recall affects certain Ford model year 2017-2020 F-Super Duty, F-250, F-350, F-450 vehicles and 2017-2020 Lincoln Continental vehicles.

  1. April Marie Moya says:

My mother in law was recently in a car accident in her Hybrid Toyota Camry, due to an acceleration issue and brakes not working. She died as a result 17 days later. Her sister endured many injuries as well. I understand that Toyota has had acceleration issues in the past, but it seems from research they are paying out claims rather than dealing with and fixing the real issue, and like my mother in law, fatalities are continuing with no resolution to the acceleration problem.
