Subaru recall overview:

  • Who: Subaru recalled almost 60,000 of its 2015-2021 WRX STI vehicles.
  • Why: The affected vehicles may have a defective backup lamp switch.
  • Where: The Subaru recall is nationwide in the United States.

Subaru recalled almost 60,000 of its 2015-2021 WRX STI vehicles because the backup lights can fail to turn on, increasing the risk of a crash.

Subaru of America Inc. issued the recall in association with the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) July 25.

It applies to a total of 59,934 WRX STI vehicles produced from Nov. 14, 2013, to Oct. 21, 2021.

Subaru said the recall does not apply to all 2015- to 2021-model vehicles, and it will mail affected customers about the issue Sept. 19.

Dealers will inspect and replace the backup light switch, as necessary, free of charge.

Subaru recall says faulty backup light can increase risk of crash

The Subaru defect relates to a potential chemical reaction in the materials used in the construction of the backup light switch, Subaru says.

The reaction can cause corrosion, which stops the backup light switches from working and thus stops the backup lights from turning on. The issue can also cause the rearview camera image to stop displaying when the vehicle is in reverse.

“If the backup lights do not illuminate when the vehicle is in reverse gear, this may reduce the awareness of other motorists or road users of the driver’s intention to operate the vehicle in reverse, increasing the risk of a crash,” the Subaru recall says.

Subaru is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

In March, four Subaru customers sued Subaru of America Inc. and Subaru Corp. for allegedly concealing a defect in certain engines’ piston ringlands, which is said to cause the engines to fail far earlier than they are supposed to.
