Kia, Hyundai recall overview:
- Who: Hyundai and Kia are warning owners of Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride vehicles to park their cars outside due to a fire risk.
- Why: The cars can short circuit while driving or parked, causing a vehicle fire.
- Where: The warning applies to vehicles across the United States.
Hyundai and Kia are recalling an additional 281,000 vehicles due to a fire risk, and are warning owners of Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride vehicles to park their cars outside and away from structures, as the vehicles can spontaneously catch fire.
The notice comes after the companies recalled nearly half a million vehicles in February for similar reasons.
In a press release posted Aug. 23 to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, Hyundai Motor America and Kia America announced that owners of select Model Year 2020-2022 Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride vehicles should start to park their cars outside and away from homes and other structures until their vehicles have been repaired, due to new recalls for the risk of fire.
The recalls involve 245,030 Model Year 2020-2022 Hyundai Palisade vehicles recalled Aug. 18, and 36,417 Model Year 2020-2022 Kia Telluride vehicles recalled Aug. 15.
A “stop sale” was also issued with this month’s announcement, in accordance with federal regulations, for affected unsold vehicles at dealers and vehicle processing centers.
The issue relates to an accessory tow hitch sold through dealerships that may allow moisture into the harness module, causing a short circuit, the notice says.
“In some cases, an electrical short can cause a vehicle fire while driving or while parked and turned off.”
There are no confirmed fires, crashes or injuries related to this condition in the United States, the NHTSA said.
Kia, Hyundai repair under development
The recall repair is under development, the NHTSA said. When a repair is available, all owners of potentially affected vehicles will be notified by mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Hyundai or Kia dealer.
As an interim repair, Hyundai dealers will inspect the tow hitch module and remove the fuse, as necessary. An interim repair is not available for Kia vehicles, the company said.
Meanwhile, Kia and Hyundai are also asking nearly half a million customers of Kia Sportage and Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles to park them outside and away from structures as they can spontaneously catch fire even when off.
In a safety notice posted to the NHTSA website Feb. 8, the automakers recommended that owners of select model year 2014-2016 Kia Sportage, 2016-2018 Kia K900 and 2016-2018 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles do not park their cars near anything that could catch fire.
Hyundai is recalling 357,830 of its 2016-2018 Santa Fe, 2017-2018 Santa Fe Sport, 2019 Santa Fe XL and 2014-2015 Tucson vehicles. Kia is recalling 126,747 of certain 2016-2018 K900 and 2014-2016 Sportage vehicles.
