Ferrari recall overview:

  • Who: Ferrari recalled almost every car it’s sold in the United States since 2005 due to a brake fluid issue.
  • Why: Ferrari says the vehicles are potentially fitted with a faulty brake fluid reservoir cap.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide in the United States.

Ferrari recalled almost every car it’s sold in the United States since 2005 due to a potentially dangerous brake fluid issue.

According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall filing dated July 26, a total of 23,555 Ferrari models sold in the United States have been fitted with a potentially faulty brake fluid reservoir cap that may not vent pressure adequately.

This can lead to a vacuum in the reservoir, potentially causing brake fluid to leak. If the brake fluid reservoir runs dry, this can lead to total brake failure, according to the Ferrari recall.

“Upon total loss of brake fluid, the vehicle would lose braking capability, which may result in injury or death to vehicle occupants,” the recall notice says.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Ferrari recall says drivers should take heed of warnings

Drivers with affected vehicles may have some warning, the Ferrari recall says. When the quantity of brake fluid in the brake fluid reservoir decreases by approximately 50% of the maximum reservoir level, a warning light will appear on the vehicle’s dashboard.

On later models, a message will also appear on the vehicle’s dashboard that reads, “Brake fluid level low.” On certain models, an acoustic buzzer will sound.

Ferrari suggests that if any of the recalled cars flash a low brake fluid warning, the driver should pull over immediately and have their car towed to the dealer.

The company estimates only 1% of the cars it’s recalling are potentially affected.

The fix is a new brake fluid reservoir cap and a software update that provides a message in the gauge cluster warning drivers if brake fluid levels run dangerously low, according to the Ferrari recall.

The oldest cars affected are the 612 Scaglietti, which entered production in March 2004. The issue affects cars built as late as July 22, 2022.

Ferrari plans to send notifications to owners and dealers on Sept. 24.

In 2021, Ferrari announced a recall due to a braking issue affecting 9,985 of its vehicles. At the time, the luxury sports car maker said the vehicles could lose the ability to brake due to potential brake fluid leaks, but it hadn’t yet worked out the reason for the issue or the fix.
