Honda is recalling more than 1.6 million vehicles due to a potential defect that can make steering difficult for drivers.

The Honda steering recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on Oct. 3. It applies to 1,693,199 vehicles of the following makes and models:

  • 2023-2025 Acura Integra
  • 2023-2025 Honda Civic Type R
  • 2023-2025 Honda CR-V (both gasoline and hybrid electric models)
  • 2023-2025 Honda HR-V
  • 2022-2025 Honda Civic (gasoline, both sedan and hatchback models)
  • 2024-2025 Acura Integra Type S
  • 2025 Honda CR-V Fuel Cell EV
  • 2025 Honda Civic (hybrid, both sedan and hatchback models)

According to the Honda recall, the steering gearbox assembly may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can cause excessive internal friction. This can lead to difficulty steering the vehicle, the notice says.

“Increased friction between the worm gear and worm wheel can increase steering effort and difficulty, increasing the risk of a crash or injury,” the recall says.

As of Sept. 26, Honda had received 10,328 warranty claims related to the issue and no reports of injuries or deaths, the automaker said.

Free repair offered

Honda is offering a free repair for the recalled vehicles. Dealers will replace the worm gear spring and redistribute or add grease as necessary, free of charge, the Honda recall says.

Letters about the Honda steering issue will be sent to drivers by Nov. 18.

Last month, a consumer filed a class action lawsuit against American Honda Motor Co. claiming the automaker sold vehicles with a dangerous design flaw in their braking systems — and an earlier recall process failed to remedy the issue.
