Tesla is recalling more than 9,000 of its 2016 Model X vehicles as cosmetic trim pieces on the vehiclesโ roofs can come off, posing a crash hazard.
The Tesla recall was published to the U.S. Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on Aug. 15, 2024. It applies to 9,136 Model X vehicles.ย
According to the recall, the front and center roof cosmetic trim pieces may be stuck to the vehicle without primer.ย ย
As a result, one or both pieces of trim may separate from the vehicle, the recall says.ย
โTrim that separates from the vehicle during use can create a road hazard and increase the risk of a crash,โ it says.
No injuries so far, recall says
As a remedy to the issues, Tesla service workers will test the roof trim adhesion and reattach the trim pieces as necessary, free of charge, the company said.ย
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Oct. 14, 2024.ย ย
Tesla said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from the condition, so far. However, it said if the cosmetic trim โ or applique โ separates from the vehicle while in drive, it could create a road hazard for following motorists and increase their risk of injury or a crash.ย
Prior to separating, an applique without primer may create a detectable noise inside the cabin for either a short or prolonged period of time, the recall says. Separately, the driver may see the applique coming loose.
Earlier this month, Tesla recalled more than 1.8 million vehicles due to a defect that can cause the hood on the vehicles to be open without drivers getting a notification.
