President Joe Biden plans on signing an executive order that will protect access to reproductive health care services in the wake of Roe v. Wade getting overturned by the Supreme Court last month.
The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade placed the ability to determine the legality of abortion back into the hands of the states.
The White House, meanwhile, says in a statement that Biden is committed to “doing everything in his power” to defend reproductive rights and allow safe and legal access to abortions to those that need and or want them.
The executive order will safeguard access to reproductive health care services, including contraception and abortion, protect the privacy of patients and their access to correct information and help promote the safety and security of patients, clinics and providers, according to the White House.
Further, the executive order will help coordinate efforts being made by the federal government to “protect reproductive rights and access to healthcare.”
“Fundamental rights – to privacy, autonomy, freedom, and equality – have been denied to millions of women across the country, with grave implications for their health, lives and wellbeing,” the White House says in a statement.
White House directs HHS to submit report on efforts to protect reproductive health care services access
As part of protecting access to reproductive health care services, the White House says Biden has given the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) thirty days to submit a report on their efforts.
The White House says Biden wants to know how the HHS plans to protect access to medical abortion, ensure emergency medical care, protect access to contraception, launch outreach and public education efforts and convene volunteer lawyers.
Biden also directed the HHS to establish an interagency task force that will include the attorney general and be responsible for “coordinating Federal interagency policymaking and program development.”
In regard to patient privacy, the executive order aims to protect patients’ sensitive health information and from falling victim to privacy violations and fraudulent and deceptive practices, according to the White House.
The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade has also caused period tracking app developers to take a closer look at the data privacy protections in place for their users.
Experts, meanwhile, have said that changing abortion laws will financially harm millions of Americans.
