Lyft assault lawsuits overview:
- Who: Eleven Lyft passengers and two Lyft drivers have filed separate lawsuits against the ride-hailing company.
- Why: Lyft passengers and drivers claim the company exposed its drivers and passengers to physical and sexual assaults due to allegedly relaxed background checks and screenings.
- Where: The lawsuits have been filed in the Superior Court of the State of California.
Lyft has been hit with 13 separate lawsuits claiming drivers and passengers of the ride-hailing company are subjected to physical and sexual assaults on account of its allegedly inadequate background check and screening policies.
The lawsuits have been filed against Lyft by eleven passengers and two of its drivers, all of whom argue the company has systematically failed to properly vet their drivers or passengers who use the service.
Lyft passengers are claiming that the company has known for years that it has a “sexual predator crisis” among its drivers, but that it “continues to hire drivers without performing adequate background checks.”
Passengers also argue that Lyft fails to provide harassment training for its drivers and doesn’t have adequate procedures in place that would allow it to provide proper oversight of its drivers in order to protect riders.
Lyft accused of failing to adequately investigate passenger complaints
Lyft also fails to adequately investigate complaints its passengers make about experiencing either sexually inappropriate behavior or a serious sexual assault, the passengers’ Lyft lawsuits allege.
“LYFT does not have a zero-tolerance policy for sexual misconduct and has allowed drivers who have been reported for misconduct to continue driving,” state the Lyft passengers lawsuits.
Lyft drivers, meanwhile, claim they are also being harassed by their passengers and that Lyft does nothing to protect them from unruly behavior.
“Rather than taking reasonable precautions in support of its driver employees, Lyft has intentionally and systematically failed to protect its drivers,” state the Lyft drivers’ lawsuits.
A class action lawsuit was filed against Lyft and Uber in June over claims the companies created a duopoly with their ride-hailing services and are working together to suppress working conditions and pay for their drivers.
If you were the victim of sexual assault by an Uber driver from 2009 to the present or a Lyft driver from 2012 to the present, you may qualify to participate in a rideshare lawsuit investigation.
The plaintiffs are represented by Adam B. Wolf and Tracey Cowan of Peiffer Wolf Carr Kane Conway & Wise LLP.
The Lyft assault lawsuits are Doe v. Lyft, Rasta v. Lyft, Garcia-Galicia v. Lyft, and Collins v. Lyft, in the Superior Court of the State of California, County of San Francisco.
