Amid mounting glyphosate cancer lawsuits, Roundup manufacturer Bayer is reportedly standing by its product’s safety.
Bayer’s popular weed killer Roundup is the subject of thousands of lawsuits. Consumer plaintiffs argue that the weed killer’s active ingredient, glyphosate, caused them to develop cancers such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Roundup glyphosate cancer lawsuits are reportedly mounting, with more than 40,000 consumers having sued Bayer and its subsidiary, Monsanto. Despite the growing number of legal claims, Bayer maintains that the number of claims is “not that surprising.”
“This increase in the number of lawsuits does not change our conviction of the safety profile of glyphosate and is by no means a reflection of the merits of this litigation,” Bayer CEO Werner Baumann reportedly told investors.
Baumann said the company is appealing the three trials it has already lost and is “constructively” engaging in mediation with plaintiffs. The executive reportedly also said the company would only agree to a settlement if it were “financially reasonable” and if it meant it would bring “reasonable closure to the overall litigation.”
Mediator Ken Feinberg has also given an update on the Roundup lawsuits, telling Reuters that “mediation is going slowly but steadily.”
Glyphosate Cancer Claims
Plaintiffs in glyphosate cancer lawsuits have prevailed in three trials against Bayer over claims that Roundup caused them to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is cancer that develops in the lymphocytes – white blood cells that act as part of the immune system. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma vary but may include swollen lymph nodes (in the neck, armpit, and groin), abdominal swelling, abdominal pain, chest pain, coughing, trouble breathing, persistent fatigue, fever, night sweats, and unexplained weight loss.
Consumers claim that they developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after using Roundup regularly over the course of several years.
Although Bayer and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) insist that glyphosate is safe and does not cause cancer, international experts disagree. The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen.
Luckily for consumers, juries have agreed with the IARC when reaching verdicts, resulting in large damage awards.
Last year, a school groundskeeper won $80 million in the first successful Roundup cancer trial. He claimed that in the course of his job, he sprayed Roundup up to 30 times each summer, which his attorneys argued directly contributed to the plaintiff developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
In March, another man secured a win when a California jury determined that his use of Roundup for more than 25 years was a “substantial factor” in his non-Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis.
And in May, another California jury awarded a husband and wife $2.05 billion in damages after finding they both developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma from Roundup use. The couple, who are avid gardeners, purportedly used the weed killer on their driveway for over 20 years.
Emboldened by these verdicts, thousands of plaintiffs have continued to file lawsuits against Bayer and Monsanto.
If you or a loved one developed cancer after using Roundup as a farm worker or home gardener, you may have a legal claim. Legal migrant farm workers may also seek help. Learn more by filling out the form on this page for a FREE case evaluation.
