Plaintiff Ceci Ayala-Bland filed a class action lawsuit against Walmart, Inc., over the company using money transfers that have been used to commit fraud. Walmart has reported for years that its money transfers have been used for millions of dollars in fraud, according to the Walmart money transfer class action.

Plaintiffs also claim that Walmart’s money transfer policies have made it easier for fraud to occur over the years. That includes the failure to deny payouts to suspected fraudsters, according to the Walmart class action.

“These practices have harmed many consumers, including people struggling with debt, those threatened by imposters, and older Americans,” the Walmart class action says. “Walmart is well aware that telemarketing and other mass marketing frauds, such as “grandparent” scams, lottery scams, and government agent impersonator scams, induce people to use Walmart’s money transfer services to send money to domestic and international fraud rings.

“Nevertheless, Walmart has continued processing fraud-induced money transfers at its stores—funding telemarketing and other scams — without adopting policies and practices that effectively detect and prevent these transfers.”

Plaintiff lost around $4,500 in a Walmart money transfer in October 2021, says class action lawsuit

The plaintiff lost around $4,500 in a Walmart money transfer and was not reimbursed by Walmart in October 2021, according to the Walmart class action.

Despite the prevalence of money transfer scams, the Walmart money transfer class action claims that the company has done little to stop the scams from continuing.

An Illinois federal judge partially dismissed claims from the Federal Trade Commission against Walmart, stating it didn’t prove Walmart knew fraudsters used its money-transferring service to commit fraud, in an April ruling.

  1. Dave Hennings says:

I was scammed for $800.00 for a product I was trying to buy through the Internet. They told me they needed a cash transfer for shipping and handling and tax of the product. Made a transfer through Walmart never heard back again from the scammer.
