Walmart Inc. has been hit with a class action lawsuit alleging it makes false and misleading claims about the weight loss benefits associated with its Spring Valley Garcinia Cambogia supplements.

Plaintiffs Lynn Bolden and Sandra Giorgi filed the Walmart class action lawsuit, claiming that Walmart falsely advertises Spring Valley Garcinia Cambogia as an effective “weight management” tool.

Walmart class action says scientific studies show active ingredients no more effective than placebo

The active ingredients in the Spring Valley Garcinia Cambogia supplements are hydroxycitric acid and chromium picolinate, which the Walmart class action lawsuit says are “scientifically proven to be incapable of providing such weight-loss benefits.”

The lawsuit points to the supplement’s label, which prominently states “Weight Management Support” and “Garcinia Cambogia Extract is a source of hydroxycitric acid (HCA) that helps support weight management goals.”

However, numerous scientific studies have allegedly shown that neither Garcinia Cambogia extract nor HCA provide weight management benefits in humans. The studies reportedly found that neither ingredient is more effective than a placebo, according to the lawsuit.

Bolden and Giorgi both claim that they purchased Spring Valley Garcinia Cambogia supplements after reading the label and relied on the claims that the supplement was safe and effective for weight loss. They say that they would not have purchased the product if they had known the representations on the label were false.

The Walmart class action lawsuit asserts claims for violations of the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act, Unfair Competition Law and False Advertising Law.

In recent months, Walmart has faced numerous recalls and class action lawsuits. In July, the retailer was hit with at least two other false advertising class action lawsuits. One Walmart class action lawsuit alleges Great Value creamer should actually be considered a “whitener” because it does not contain enough milk to be considered a “creamer.”

The second false advertising class action alleges Walmart’s Great Value brand mayonnaise does not contain as much olive oil as represented on the label.
