Walmart Great Value Oats & Honey Crunchy Granola Bars class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Charlene Vazquez filed a class action lawsuit against Walmart Inc.
  • Why: Vazquez claims Walmart misrepresents that its Great Value brand Oats & Honey Crunchy Granola Bars are primarily sweetened with honey.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in New York federal court.

Walmart misrepresents that its Great Value brand Oats & Honey Crunchy Granola Bars are primarily sweetened with honey and contain limited ingredients other than oats and honey, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Charlene Vazquez claims that, in reality, Walmart’s Great Value brand Oats & Honey Crunch Granola Bars contain “a de minimis amount of honey relative to conventional sugars.”

Vazquez argues consumers are drawn to products purporting to be sweetened with honey rather than sugar due to the former’s lower glycemic index, unprocessed nature, and nutritional value, among other things.

“Consumers relying on the front label will be satisfied that whole grain oats are the main ingredient but will be dissatisfied honey is a minor ingredient, especially compared to the amount of sugar,” the Walmart class action states.

Vazquez wants to represent a New York class and multistate consumer fraud subclass of individuals who have purchased Walmart’s Great Value brand Oats & Honey Crunchy Granola Bars.

Walmart accused of misrepresenting honey as a main ingredient

Walmart’s promotion of honey as a main ingredient after oats on the granola bars’ front labeling is a false and misleading representation of how much honey is actually in the product, the Walmart class action alleges.

Vazquez argues that, due to the alleged misrepresentations, the granola bars are worth “materially less” than what Walmart represents and sells them for.

“Defendant sold more of the Product and at higher prices than it would have in the absence of this misconduct, resulting in additional profits at the expense of consumers,” the Walmart class action states.

Vazquez claims Walmart is guilty of fraud and unjust enrichment and in violation of New York General Business Law, the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act and multiple state consumer fraud acts.

Plaintiff is demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory relief along with monetary, statutory and/or punitive damages for herself and all class members.

A similar class action lawsuit was filed against Walmart earlier this month over claims the company’s Great Value brand Chocolate Caramel Coffee Creamer does not contain enough milk to be considered a creamer
