Thermos recall overview:
- Who: Thermos is recalling approximately 5.8 million Stainless King Food Jars and 2.3 million Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles.
- Why: The Thermos recall is due to the risk of serious impact injuries and lacerations caused by the stopper forcefully ejecting when opened.
- Where: The recall is active in the United States.
Thermos is recalling more than 8 million of its Stainless King Food Jars and Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles due to potential hazards. The recall, announced on April 30, affects products sold across the United States.
The affected items include the 16-oz Stainless King Food Jar (SK3000), 24-oz Stainless King Food Jar (SK3020) and 40-oz Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottle (SK3010).
The Thermos recall was prompted by reports that the stopper of these containers lacks a pressure relief mechanism, leading to potential ejection hazards when perishable food or beverages are stored for extended periods.
According to the recall notice, “the stopper can forcefully eject when opened, which can result in serious impact injury and laceration hazards to the consumer.”
The products were available in various colors and sold at major retailers like Target and Walmart, as well as online platforms such as Amazon.com and Thermos.com, from March 2008 to July 2024.
Thermos recall reports 27 incidents, including three vision loss injuries
The recall notice highlights the serious nature of the injuries reported, with 27 incidents involving forcefully ejected stoppers. Among these, three cases resulted in permanent vision loss due to impact injuries.
Consumers are therefore urged to stop using the recalled products immediately and contact Thermos for a free replacement.
For the Stainless King Food Jars, consumers are instructed to discard the stopper and send a photo of it to Thermos. For the Sportsman Bottles, the entire bottle should be returned using a prepaid shipping label provided by Thermos.
The company has assured consumers that they will receive a new pressure relief stopper or a replacement bottle, depending on the model. This proactive measure aims to prevent further incidents and ensure consumer safety.
