Generac recall overview:

  • Who: Generac Power Systems Inc. is recalling approximately 149,400 portable generators in the United States and 260 units in Canada.
  • Why: The recall is due to a potential fire hazard caused by fuel leaking from the carburetor when the generator is first filled with gasoline.
  • Where: The recall is effective in both the United States and Canada.

Generac is recalling its portable generators due to a risk of fire hazard. The recall affects more than 149,000 units sold in the United States and 260 units sold in Canada.

The recall, announced on April 16, includes various models of Generac portable generators, such as the GP6500E, GP8000E and GP3600, among others.

These generators are identifiable by the “Generac” brand name and unit type printed on the control panel, with model and serial numbers located on a label on the side of the unit and manufactured in Vietnam.

According to the Generac recall, fuel may leak from the carburetor when first filled, posing a significant fire risk.

Consumers urged to check their generators for any fuel leaks

Generac advises consumers to cease using the affected generators immediately and contact the company to verify if their unit is included in the Generac recall.

If a generator has not been filled with fuel or has shown leakage, it should be taken to a dealer for a free repair.

The recall notice emphasizes that consumers with Generac generators that have been used without any fuel leakage can continue their use safely.

Consumers are encouraged to contact Generac at 1-800-396-9951 or visit its website for more information on the Generac recall process and to determine if their generator is affected.

Generac has not reported any injuries related to this recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

However, Generac is currently facing allegations in a class action lawsuit that its standby generator contained a hidden defect that causes them to fail during power outages.
