Samsung TV Defect Class Action Lawsuit

By Kimberly Mirando

SamsungA class action lawsuit filed in Superior Court claims that Samsung plasma, liquid crystal display and digital TVs have defective capacitors that cause the TVs to prematurely fail.

According to the Samsung TV class action lawsuit, “The Televisions are defectively designed and/or use defective materials because normal operation and usage of the Televisions exposes the capacitors…to excessive heat and/or excessive voltage, which, in turn, causes the capacitors to fail.”

As a result, Samsung TVs fail before their expected useful life has expired.

The Samsung TV class action lawsuit further charges the company with knowing about the design defect but failing to recall the Televisions to fix the problem, and refusing to pay for labor or diagnostic expenses for consumers who’s TVs manifested the defect more than a year after purchase. As a result, consumers “have paid and continue to incur substantial parts and labor fees to repair their defectively designed Televisions,” the class action lawsuit states.

The Samsung TV class action lawsuit is brought on behalf of all consumers who purchased a Samsung TV in California from January 1, 2006 to the present. It is seeking restitution, damages and other relief for violation of the Consumer Legal Remedies Act, breach of warranty, and violation of the Unfair Competition Law.

10 month old 51 inch Samsung Plasma (purchased 1/2012) made LOUD pop, then no picture and not sound,… and smoke coming up the rear center. Would like to join the law suit, in Texas.

Ditto to Susan. Bought in Cal the PN58A650 in Mar 2009. Great till last month when started power cycling at startup and now inop. No capacitor issue that O can see. Clearly design defect for so many failures so quickly though. Sony trinitron lasts 20 years and still going.

We bought a 58 in Plasma TV in Jan 2009, TV died Saturday. We paid $3,400 for this TV, I called Samsung and they said they will not assist me. My model number is PN58A650, I don’t believe this was part of the settlement but it should be. It is the same issue, makes clicking noises and we smelled wires burning and then the TV would not turn on at all.
We are expected to pay 3,400 for a tv that didn’t last 4 years. What kind of crap is that!
Their Customer Support rep Leticia was very very rude and snotty.

I have a fpt5084x/xaa as well it just clicks several time and then starts the red light a very slow blink then nothing. It was on for a few hours last night then turned off and tried to turn on agian this noon. I is plugged into a surge protector and has it’s own breaker and outlet, plus there was no storms since the last time it was working. This tv has seen fairly gentle use for about 2 years and nobady in my family or house smokes. I seems like samsung either can’t get it in thier heads to put good compacitors on thier boards or it seems more likly that they are designing these screens to fail at almost right around 2 years since everyone been saying that this model tends to fail all around the same time.

We bought a 51″ Samsung plasma in July 2011. We noticed that there was a weird line on the top of the screen and thought it was just the cable system (although it was not on any other TV) then one day a tapped the edge of the TV with an empty plastic laundry basket and the wham–no picture at all (this tap would not even knock down a toddler)–Samsung’s response–too bad soo sad. They said it was our fault (there was a tiny 3/4″ crack (you need a flash light to see it) and when a screen is cracked it voids the warranty–if their TVs are this delicate then they can keep them–We will never buy another Samsung product and we are telling everyone to stay away.

Samsung stood behind my 55″ LED. Replaced motherboard at their expense.

I have a HPT/5054x/XAA Samsung 50 inch Plasma, The picture has gone out, however you have sound, there is also a hot smell coming from the back. I had a repair man come out to the house he said the circuit board Y, and the Circuit Board upper and lower buffer are all out. He also said this is very common because of the design of the TV. Has anyone else had these issues with their TV, when I called Samsung they said they have never had a issue or complaint about this, however I find that hard to believe.

It happens with LED’s as well. A few weeks ago it cycled on and off and after about 4 minutes now it stays on. Bought it 13 months ago. 55″ LED model UN55D600 in North Carolina. No help from Samsung yet. Will it get worse????

We just started having the problem on our 50″ Plasma this last weekend 3-1512. The Tv was bought in July 2010, and managed to work for almost 2 years? I thought the problem was in the remote, as I couldn’t get the TV to turn on, the led light just flashed? Then when it did turn on, with in 10 secs it shuts itself off, then turns itself back on then off?? I finally had to unplug it to keep it off. I went on line to see what could be wrong, and found out that this is not an isolated incident but a growing trend. I contacted Samsung’s Customer Support with all the info, and was politely informed that because my TV was past the “1” Year warrantly I would have to contact a repair shop on my dime. Why should I have to pay to repair my TV, when Samsung is clearly at fault for not addresing this problem when came to thier attention years ago?
