Geico policyholders in Louisiana may be eligible for a settlement payment if they filed a total loss auto claim and did not receive payment for title transfer fees as part of their total loss payout.
The settlement benefits Louisiana policyholders insured by Geico under an automotive insurance policy who filed a covered total loss claim between Nov. 5, 2010, and Nov. 30, 2023.
Plaintiffs in the total loss class action lawsuit claim Geico violated Louisiana insurance laws by failing to include compensation for title transfer fees when paying total loss claims. According to the class action lawsuit, consumers could be charged a title transfer fee of up to $68.50, a handling fee of $8 and a registration fee of $26, which Geico allegedly did not consider when calculating the plaintiffs’ total loss payment.
Geico is an insurance provider that provides auto, homeowners, renters, motorcycle/ATV, boat, business and other insurance policies.Â
Geico hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the total loss class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive reimbursement for transfer fees based on when they filed their total loss claim. For total loss claims filed after June 30, 2015, class members can receive up to $82. For total loss claims filed before July 1, 2015, class members can receive up to $42. These payment amounts may be reduced if consumers received compensation for transfer fees as part of their original total loss payment.
The deadline for exclusion and objection was April 18, 2024.
The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for May 15, 2024.
To receive settlement payments, class members must submit a valid claim form by May 18, 2024.
