Samsung Refrigerator Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Two customers filed a class action lawsuit against Samsung.
  • Why: Certain Samsung refrigerators with French doors allegedly contain a defect that causes temperatures to rise inside, keeping food at an unsafe temperature.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in New Jersey federal court.

Two Samsung customers are suing the South Korean electronics giant and its American offshoot for allegedly defective refrigerators that “pose unreasonable risks of property damage and serious personal injury during normal use” by running above temperatures for safe food storage.

The refrigerators in question have varying model numbers, but all are made with French doors and a bottom freezer.

The plaintiffs are Matthew Jordan and Lisa Saghy, both of whom bought new Samsung refrigerators. In both plaintiffs’ experiences, repairs by a Samsung technician failed to remedy the temperature issue. Now, they claim Samsung refuses to provide more repairs, replacement or refund.

Jordan and Saghy seek to represent a nationwide class, a California subclass, and a Pennsylvania subclass to include all residents who bought a new Samsung refrigerator or otherwise acquired one, primarily for household use and not for resale.

Samsung Tech Allegedly Admits Refrigerator Defect ‘Cannot Be Fixed’

Jordan bought his new Samsung refrigerator for $1,298 in 2020. After a few months, he began to notice food in the bottom of the refrigerator was frozen while the top of the refrigerator held a “temperature that was too high to be safe for food storage,” according to the complaint.

Saghy bought her new Samsung refrigerator in 2017 for $2,256. In January 2022, she began to notice the refrigerator was not keeping food and drinks as cold as before and ice was forming on the back panel. In March, a technician told Saghy the temperature issue was “a known defect” and “cannot be fixed,” according to the complaint.

The Samsung class action lawsuit alleges the company knew about the temperature defect but concealed it from consumers while continuing to sell the product.

Between January 2019 and December 2021, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) received over 600 complaints about Samsung refrigerators, according to court documents. At least 211 complaints cited food spoilage; 62 cited food poisoning, according to Consumer Reports.

The plaintiffs are represented by James E. Cecchi, Lindsey H. Taylor, and Donald A. Ecklund of Carella, Byrne, Cecchi, Olstein, Brody & Agnello PC and Jonathan D. Selbin and Jason L. Lichtman of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein LLP.

Our French door Samsung has been nothing but problems. Temp in refrigerator gets warm while freezer stays cold. While under warranty had multiple parts replaced but problem continues. Now out of warranty our solution is to empty the fridge unplug and and wait for fridge to thaw out. It’s not safe and we have to through out so much bad food. Ice maker also randomly stops working.

I bought one of these refrigerators from Wayfair with an extended warranty for my daughter and her kids. She is a single Mom who gets no help for her children from dearest daddy. Only a few months after I bought it for her new home as a gift, Wayfair turned my account over to Comedity Mastercard who voided my paid for warranty. The fridge was $2,300+, the warranty another $600. Before the year was up, the icemaker wouldn’t work, now the freezer is covered in ice so it can’t be used. It is only 3 yrs old! She has no money to buy another one, nor do I. When calling a repairman, she was told she won’t find anybody to work on it. They can’t get parts. She bought a cheap freezer to replace her freezer that she can’t use. What a gift we bought her for her new home that she worked hard for. Had I ever known.

We would like to be added to this lawsuit too. Same issues with fridge and ice maker.

I purchased the Samsung refrigerator model rf260beaesr/aa in 2018. The fridge usually made clicking and clunking sounds until it stopped over this past summer. I developed stomach/digestive issues and was in and out of doctor visits, only to realise one day my drinks felt a bit warmer than usual. I put a thermometer in the fridge, and to my shock, temp was 60! I had been eating eggs, dairy, leftovers that must have turned! I called an appliance repair man, who took the back panel off the inside of the fridge to show how everything was locked in ice, rock solid, which explains why the clunking stopped-it just couldn’t run! $200 charge to come and defrost the fridge and learn that Samsungs are difficult to repair and he suggested reaching out to Samsung, directly, for a possible recall or repair. Lost food, medical expenses, and appliance repair only 5 years after purchase-so upset!

I love my samsung frig except for: the ice make freezes up, the defrost in the freezer doesn’t work, water drips into the tray even though the water is disconnected, the top section of the frig reads 32 degrees all the time, etc., etc. etc. It’s a shame that all of this is in such a pretty package. I am so disappointed and angry that my expensive purchase is a piece of nonworking junk!

My Samsung French door refrigerator was not keeping right temperature right after i got it. after about 5 to 6 visits they did something that made it work not 100%.
my ice maker has given me sooooo much problem. that i had to buy an extended warranty from best buy to have fixed.
now this warranty expired and the ice maker still doing the same.

  7. Christine says:

I bought a Samsung French Door refrigerator with a freezer on the bottom on May 17, 2023. On June 15, 2023, I noticed a cooling issue.
Gradually, the refrigerator stopped cooling at all and more than $500 worth of food went bad. I bought a mini refrigerator for $163.11 because I kept calling and getting the run around. Samsung eventually issued a voucher to purchase another brand of refrigerator and provided a $200 food replacement. $200 was an insult to the amount that I lost, particularly considering the high price of food post Covid. Samsung is refusing to reimburse me for the mini refrigerator. I also went to the emergency room with stomach issues during this ordeal. Could be the stress of being on the phone with them for hours daily, or I got sick from eating bad food. Samsung knows their refrigerators are defective due to a class action lawsuit. Samsung should pull their refrigerators from the stores until the problem is fixed rather than disrupting people’s lives by selling them a defective refrigerator and forcing them to live without a necessity such as a refrigerator.

My Samsung refrigerator is not keeping cold temperature then my food going bad. It happens almost every week.

  9. Yadigar Melikova says:

My Samsung French door refrigerator is not keeping right temperature and every week some food gets spoiled and cost me lots of money. Also, the same refrigerator is periodically collects lots of water under the vegies containers. Also, time to time stops making ice and each time I have to call people to fix it. It’s cost me money!!!!

  10. Kim Wiebusch says:

Purchased a Samsung fridge in 2017 and had problems with shelves breaking , door bins cracking , rusting in shelves and now no cooling at all , can’t use it .
