  • Who: A federal judge in Washington has granted preliminary approval to a $2 million Bosch microwave oven class action settlement. Ā
  • Why: The class action claimed that certain Bosch microwaves and microwave/oven combinations contain a defect that causes their control panel lighting to fade or become unreadable over time.
  • Where: The Bosch microwave oven settlement is valid across the United States.

A federal judge in Washington preliminarily approved a $2 million class action settlement claiming that Bosch microwaves and microwave/oven combinations contain a defect that causes their control panel lighting to dim or become unreadable over time.

The proposed settlement would provide up to $400 for reimbursement of out-of-pocket costs for Tier 1 class members. Both Tier 1 and Tier 2 class members would be eligible for a three-year extended service plan through which Bosch will replace defective control panels or reimburse up to $250 for future repair costs.

Specifically, the settlement applies to Bosch microwaves and microwave/oven combination products with the serial numbers HBL5751UC, HBL8751UC, HMC80151UC, HMC80251UC and HMNC87151UC.

The Bosch class action was initially filed in 2021 over claims that the ovensā€™ control panel lighting can dim to the point that vital features ā€” such as temperature display, cooking modes, and clock and timer displays ā€” become unusable.

U.S. District Judge Richard A. Jones preliminarily approved the Bosch settlement and set a final approval hearing for June 13, 2024, with an opt-out deadline of April 25, 2024.Ā

Plaintiffs Elizabeth Peterson, Amanda Carlton, Rebecca Hirsch, Michele Oā€™Dell and Prasanna Ramakrishnan were approved as the class representatives.Ā

According to the Bosch settlement agreement, class counsel may request up to $725,000 for attorney fees and costs, and up to $2,500 for each class representative as reasonable service awards.
