A federal judge in Washington preliminarily approved a $2 million class action settlement claiming that Bosch microwaves and microwave/oven combinations contain a defect that causes their control panel lighting to dim or become unreadable over time.
The proposed settlement would provide up to $400 for reimbursement of out-of-pocket costs for Tier 1 class members. Both Tier 1 and Tier 2 class members would be eligible for a three-year extended service plan through which Bosch will replace defective control panels or reimburse up to $250 for future repair costs.
Specifically, the settlement applies to Bosch microwaves and microwave/oven combination products with the serial numbers HBL5751UC, HBL8751UC, HMC80151UC, HMC80251UC and HMNC87151UC.
The Bosch class action was initially filed in 2021 over claims that the ovensā control panel lighting can dim to the point that vital features ā such as temperature display, cooking modes, and clock and timer displays ā become unusable.
Up to $725K in attorney fees, $2,500 in service fees could be awarded
U.S. District Judge Richard A. Jones preliminarily approved the Bosch settlement and set a final approval hearing for June 13, 2024, with an opt-out deadline of April 25, 2024.Ā
Plaintiffs Elizabeth Peterson, Amanda Carlton, Rebecca Hirsch, Michele OāDell and Prasanna Ramakrishnan were approved as the class representatives.Ā
According to the Bosch settlement agreement, class counsel may request up to $725,000 for attorney fees and costs, and up to $2,500 for each class representative as reasonable service awards.
