Honda class action lawsuitA federal class action lawsuit has been filed against Honda claiming its 2003-2007 Accords and Civics have defective paint that delaminates, causing the vehicles to appear faded or to have peeling paint.

The Honda Civic/Accord paint class action lawsuit was filed by two Plaintiffs, including a New York resident who alleges portions of her 2003 Honda Accord began exhibiting “areas and splotches of deterioration and eventually grey or white areas where the vehicle’s original paint had delaminated. Over time, the paint delamination has increased in severity and extent, covering several of the vehicle’s body panels.” When the Plaintiff brought her car to a Honda dealership to repair the paint delamination, Honda denied her request because it was beyond the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty.

“In modern vehicles, automobile paint is routinely expected to last the lifetime of the vehicle, such that, absent an accident, a vehicles owner reasonably would not expect to have to spend thousands of dollars to have his or her vehicles stripped and repainted during ownership of the car,” the class action lawsuit says. “Honda, however, has manufactured vehicles with a defective paint or paint application, that leaves vehicle owners with a vehicle of unacceptable appearance. In addition, the delamination of the paint from the vehicle’s body panels, exposing the vehicle to enhanced erosion.”

The Honda paint class action lawsuit is brought on behalf of all California and New York owners of a model year 2003-2007 Honda vehicles. It is seeking actual damages and losses sustained by Class Members and other relief for breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty of merchantability, and violation of California’s unfair competition law.

I purchased a new 2002 fully loaded black Accord EX-VL from Hendrick Honda in Charlotte, NC. After 4 years of ownership and maticulous care of the car, the black paint and clear coat started to look horrible, a real embarrassment to drive. I took the car back to Hendrick Honda with 46k miles on it and was told it was out of warranty and that Honda was not aware of any paint problems nor did they have any recalls. Bullshit!!!
I travel all over the US and I can’t begin to tell you the 1000’s of Honda’s I see with the Honda Cancer. I went back again today after learning more about the class action’s, and still was told no help was available as it is now way past any reasonable time frame. I again pointed out that I brought the car back after 4 years of ownership with 46k on it was told basically to pound salt. Like many others out there, I will never own a Honda again and plan on telling anyone who even thinks about buying one to THINK AGAIN!! as Honda does not stand behind there products.
    Sincerely,
    Totally displeased.!!

Same here! 2009 Honda Civic. black. And the paint is fading off to the primer. It is strange. And we do maintain the car just like all of the other cars we have and none have this kind of problem including our 13 year old lexus and 14 year old Ford F150 and the 12 year old PT Cruiser.

As with Kerry Daniel above, I have approached Appletree Honda in Fletcher, NC about cracked paint on the hood of our gray 2006 Civic. This is a basic paint quality issue, nothing to do with washing and waxing or upkeep. I have a 99 Camry with better paint and have never seen this problem on any other vehicle I have owned. Paint is supposed to last the life of the car. I gave Appletree Honda 3 estimates and each estimator was quite familiar with the “problem”. I will be more than happy to join or start another class action suit for anyone involved here.

I have a 2008 Civic LX. Clear coat faded and became blotchy on the roof. Also experienced crows feet cracks on the hood. Honda did pay most of the cost to get it fixed in May of this year. Now fading and lifting of clear coat is occuring on other areas. I have to bring it to the dealer again. I have never experienced this on previuos Honda Civics. This is unacceptable.

I own a 2006 Honda Civic Coupe, color Atomic Blue. I have fairly low mileage: 58,000. About a year or so ago I began noticing fading on my room , hood and trunk lid. The areas in question started out as small, but over the winter months they became much worse. I read some of the consumer posts online and was discouraged from pursuing anything for some time because others reported that Honda was unwilling to step up to the plate and do something about the problem. However, I decided to just go to my dealer — Apple Tree Honda in Fletcher NC to see for myself what they would say and do. I took the matter up with Danny Ownbey, my service adviser. He was non-commital; however, he took pictures and asked me to go to two paint/body shops and secure estimates. Both estimates came in at around $2,200. Then he scheduled an appointment for me to meet with a “factory rep” who only visits the dealership once a month. On the day of my appointment, the rep came in while I was in the waiting room. Minutes later Danny Ownbey called me to his desk and said “We’re going to paint your car.” I couldn’t believe my ears. All I had to pay was a $100 deductible. Yesterday I picked up my car and it looks brand new. I urge everyone here to pursue this through your dealership and print this email out as a guide in handling it with your service adviser. I can’t help but think that Honda is beginning to realize they need to do something about this problem if they are going to keep their customers.

I have a 2006 Honda Civic Coupe. A few months ago I noticed a spot or two but now it is horrible. I took it back to Team Honda in Baton Rouge, LA. After they looked into the matter, I was told that due to my high mileage they are not willing to help at all. This just doesn’t make sense to me. A car with 10,000 miles can sit in the sun all day the same as a car on the road with much more miles. This should have no affect what so ever on the paint. It is very disappointing that Honda is not making good on there defective paint. I wish they would have a class action suit in Louisiana. I would be the first to join. I will NEVER buy Honda again and tell as many people as I can NOT to buy Honda and how they don’t stand behind there product!!!!

I have a 2006 Honda Civic EX (blue) and it started having spots appear on the top 1.5 years ago and oh how they have grown, totally takes away from the value my car should have. I only have 60,000 miles and the inside looks new. Definitely defective clear coat/paint. How do I get involved?

I also have a 2006 Honda Civic with crows feet all over the hood and growing. I take extremely good care of my car .The honda dealer and a corporate representative( Jeff May) recognized the problem on my car 3 years ago and said, too bad it’s after the warranty period. One uniformed Honda service manager stated the paint damage was from heat from the engine. REALLY !!!

Mine, too! I have a ’06 Honda Civic – for the past 2 years it looks like I kept it in acid rain. I BABIED this car/did all the right things. Garage, the right washes/waxing/etc. I’m disgusted. My saturn (that I sold to a friend to buy this car) is a 2000 – and the paint STILL LOOKS PRISTINE!!! My car looks like the junk from an acid rain. How do I sign up for this lawsuit??!

My 2003 Honda Accord is fading as well, it’s on the back of the trunk and on the roof of the car. What can I do? How do I get involved with this class action suit?
