Honda class action lawsuitA federal class action lawsuit has been filed against Honda claiming its 2003-2007 Accords and Civics have defective paint that delaminates, causing the vehicles to appear faded or to have peeling paint.

The Honda Civic/Accord paint class action lawsuit was filed by two Plaintiffs, including a New York resident who alleges portions of her 2003 Honda Accord began exhibiting “areas and splotches of deterioration and eventually grey or white areas where the vehicle’s original paint had delaminated. Over time, the paint delamination has increased in severity and extent, covering several of the vehicle’s body panels.” When the Plaintiff brought her car to a Honda dealership to repair the paint delamination, Honda denied her request because it was beyond the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty.

“In modern vehicles, automobile paint is routinely expected to last the lifetime of the vehicle, such that, absent an accident, a vehicles owner reasonably would not expect to have to spend thousands of dollars to have his or her vehicles stripped and repainted during ownership of the car,” the class action lawsuit says. “Honda, however, has manufactured vehicles with a defective paint or paint application, that leaves vehicle owners with a vehicle of unacceptable appearance. In addition, the delamination of the paint from the vehicle’s body panels, exposing the vehicle to enhanced erosion.”

The Honda paint class action lawsuit is brought on behalf of all California and New York owners of a model year 2003-2007 Honda vehicles. It is seeking actual damages and losses sustained by Class Members and other relief for breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty of merchantability, and violation of California’s unfair competition law.

Add me to the list. ’07 Civic coupe, black. Clear coat started to turn white, peel a couple of months ago. Now doubled in size. No intention of getting rid of the car so am having it painted. Honda has offered a pittance toward helping with the cost but nowhere near what they SHOULD have done, which is to admit they had a defective paint process and made it right – fully. Shameful for such a world-renowned, quality auto maker.

From spider veins to crows feet to premature fading this should not happen period. Thanks again honda .Went to local honda dealer where the vehicle was purchased used ” was not apparent at first of the paint cracks took some time to show and gradually got worse”. They told me 800.00 to repaint the hood and fenders at there special rate .” From there clear coat failure”. Every time we wash the car I cringe at the site of the cracks in the hood and fenders.

Mine is a 2002 Civic. I contacted Honda service center just recently. They contacted Honda, whereby a man by the name of Chris called me.He said I am the main Man for the entire east coast and we are sorry, your car is too old. It only has 65,000 miles on it and is garage kept. He also told me what do u expect your car is from an auction, which I didnt know bc I bought it from a honda dealer. He was very rude and when I asked for someone else he said Im the only important person you need and my decision is final. I am now looking to get it painted on my own.

I agree with Brian. Cars should be waxed a couple of times a year. They should be kept in climate control garages. Hand washed ever other day, etc, etc. I am far from perfect. I also don’t think what the complaint here is fading. I have a 1996 Honda Prelude that has a little fading, but the car still looks good . I have a 2006 Honda Si, purchased new. The Si isn’t fading, the clear coat is coming off. It looks like it has some bad disease. I took it to the independant body shop that performs work for my Honda dealer and I was told the plants were not using enough clear coat on the cars causing the problems. I know I also have a 2002 Dodge truck that I also purchased new that I have treated the same as my SI and other than a few dings the paint still loogs great. I am not having a clear coat issue with this truck’s paint job.
Yes, please contact me about joining this class action law suit!

How do I join the lawsuit? I am having these problems with my 2005 civic in Eternity Blue Pearl. I am not the original owner and wonder if that matters? I live in California. 805-404-1700

I found this when I was gettting ready to call Miracle Auto Painting to get prices on repainting my car. It’s a 2004 Civic in CA with almost no paint left on the roof and the hood and trunk and side panels are looking splotchy and milky. It flakes off! AWFUL! We have 4 Hondas in my household and I don’t know if I’ll ever have another.

I live in California and I have a 2009 Honda Civic EX that has fading paint on the roof. I regularly hand-wash (every 1-2 weeks) and wax it every 6 months. I have had numerous people telling me they have the same problem. I don’t feel a well cared for, 4 year old car should be having this issue

    1. Richard says:

I agree Honda has issues with their paint going clear back to the 90s, however; you should be waxing your car 4 times a year. Every 6 months is just not enough.

Like everything else on the car paint has to be maintained such as waxing your vehicle 2-3x a year. Like sunscreen Wax Protects your paint from the sun. Even Mercedes paint fades when not not waxed

We have the same paint situation with Toyota Corolla. The paint started to peel after several years. We couldn’t sell that car without repainting it. And even then we lost money on the sale because car was painted. Is anybody want to sue Toyota?

I would like to join this class action lawsuit too.

I have a 2007 Honda Odyssey Midnight Blue in the NY area with the same issue (Paint Peeling) and would also like to be part of this class action lawsuit.went to dealer and was told they can not do anything about it.

        1. Grady says:

This original post is from 2012, but I’m curious if you heard anything back? We also own a 2007 Odyssey, Midnight Pearl, and the hood is peeling horribly. Looked on the internet & it is clearly a problem with other Honda owners, yet the dealers won’t own up to it. We are actively seeking a resolution & would add our name to the class action lawsuit list.

          1. Jay says:

Even my car is 2003 Honda Civic and paint has gone almost every where on the car. I got the same response from Honda service that it is not under warranty to take care. How Honda can take it easy with such a quality of paint? They have to recall the vehicles for reprinting with no cost to owners

          2. Lori Reimers says:

Yes!! I am also having the same issues!! My roof is awful and now its beginning on my hood!! I would also like to find out how to be a part of this class action lawsuit.

        2. Jesse says:

I have a Honda Odyssey 2003 paint is peeling all over not just the roof or top areas. Also midnight blue

    2. D Jeffreys says:

I have this exact same problem 2003 honda civic. Add me to this complaimt

      1. Michelle says:

Me too. Its humiliating. Is this open and if so, how do I sign up.

    3. Paul Ruez says:

I too would join that one… Roof of 07 Camry is peeling and Toyota wants $4000 to repair it.

    4. T. Smith says:

We are having a similar issue with a 2009 Prius. I spoke to Toyota of Dallas during a trip there to have an oil change and they are not returning phone calls. They suggested that I reach out to Toyota Corporate. I have done so but they are suggesting that they have no responsibility. Yesterday I stopped by a body shop and the owner of the body shop indicated that his organization has been engaged by a local Honda dealer to remedy similar problems. In describing what he saw happening on our vehicle he said that the paint separating from the clear coat is known as it delamination and that this is apparent in various states on our vehicle. The remedy is to remove the paint from effective areas, he indicated that the areas effected on our Prius are the top, hood and area in the rear of the vehicle. The sides of the car do not seem effected. Would love to hear of a class action that we might participate in. I have a Lexus, Land Cruiser and this Prius. The other two vehicles have not shown similar problems.
