Ground beef recall overview: 

  • Who: Cargill Meat Solutions is recalling 16,243 pounds of ground beef sold at Walmart. 
  • Why: The Walmart ground beef could be contaminated with E. coli.

Cargill Meat Solutions is recalling approximately 16,243 pounds of ground beef sold at Walmart because it could be contaminated with E. coli.

The Walmart recall applies to 2.25-pound plastic wrapped trays with the following label markings:

  • “93% LEAN 7% FAT ALL NATURAL LEAN GROUND BEEF” with lot code 117 and establishment number “EST. 86P.” 
  • “85% LEAN 15% FAT ALL NATURAL ANGUS PREMIUM GROUND BEEF” with lot code 117 and establishment number “EST. 86P.”
  • “80% LEAN 20% FAT ALL NATURAL GROUND BEEF CHUCK” with lot code 118 and establishment number “EST. 86P.”

The ground beef recall also applies to 1.33-pound wrapped trays with the following label markings:

  • “PRIME RIB BEEF STEAK BURGERS PATTIES” with lot code 118 and establishment number “EST. 86P.
  • “80% LEAN 20% FAT ALL NATURAL GROUND BEEF CHUCK PATTIES” with lot code 118 and establishment number “EST. 86P.” 
  • “90% LEAN 10% FAT ALL NATURAL GROUND BEEF SIRLOIN PATTIES with lot code 118 and establishment number “EST. 86P.”

The recalled raw ground beef products were produced April 26-27 and distributed to Walmart locations across the United States.

Cargill Meat Solutions notified the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service of the contamination after it discovered previously segregated ground beef had inadvertently been used in the production of the new ground beef.

No illness reported from Walmart ground beef, recall says

Cargill Meat Solutions says it has not received any reports of illness related to the Walmart ground beef recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

A similar ground beef alert was issued in late April due to potential E. coli contamination in ground beef products made by Greater Omaha Packing Co.
