Honda seat belt recall overview:

  • Who: American Honda Motor Co. recalled 303,770 of its model year 2023-2024 Honda Accord and HR-V vehicles.
  • Why: The automaker initiated the recall over concerns the vehicles are equipped with defective seat belts that can fail to properly restrain vehicle occupants.
  • Where: The recall affects Honda owners nationwide.

American Honda Motor Co. issued a recall for more than 300,000 of its model year 2023-2024 Honda Accord and HR-V vehicles over concerns they are equipped with defective seat belts, creating an injury risk.

Honda initiated the recall after discovering the front seat belt pretensioners in the recalled vehicles may be missing the rivet that is meant to secure their quick connector and wire plate.

“A seat belt pretensioner missing a rivet will not properly restrain the occupant, increasing the risk of injury during a crash,” an acknowledgement letter sent to Honda by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Nov. 24 says.

The possibly defective nature of the seat belts in the recalled Honda Accord and HR-V vehicles also causes them to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, according to the Honda recall.

Honda dealers to inspect, replace seat belt pretensioner assemblies free of charge

Honda says it will have its dealers inspect and replace the seat belt pretensioner assemblies in the recalled vehicles as necessary and free of charge and expects to mail notification letters to vehicle owners Jan. 8, 2024.

Individuals who have more questions about the recall can contact Honda directly by phone at (888) 234-2138.

A group of vehicle owners filed a class action lawsuit against the automaker earlier this month, arguing Honda manufactured and sold model year 2023 HR-V vehicles equipped with defective rear windshields
