Ford transmission class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Erin Barlup and Justin Barlup filed a class action lawsuit against Ford Motor Company.
  • Why: Erin and Justin Barlup claim Ford manufactured and sold certain vehicles equipped with defective automatic transmission systems.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in Pennsylvania federal court.

Ford Motor Company manufactured and sold certain vehicles containing defective automatic transmission systems, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiffs Erin Barlup and Justin Barlup claim Ford vehicles equipped with a 10R80 10-speed transmission since 2017 can shift harshly and erratically and cause the vehicle to jerk, lunge, clunk, hesitate, surge or slip between gears.

The plaintiffs argue the allegedly defective 10-speed transmissions are equipped in Ford Expeditions, Mustangs, Rangers and F-150s and Lincoln Navigators with model years from 2017 to the present.

“Drivers need a properly functioning automatic transmission in order to safely and reliably accelerate and decelerate their Vehicles,” the Ford class action states.

The plaintiffs want to represent a nationwide class and Pennsylvania subclass of all persons who formerly or currently own or leased one or more vehicles equipped with a 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission.

Ford refuses to replace or repair allegedly defective automatic transmissions, says class action

The plaintiffs argue the allegedly defective automatic transmissions equipped in the Ford vehicles present a “potentially life-threatening safety issue,” that the automaker allegedly refuses to address.

“Upon information and belief, based on interactions between Plaintiffs and Ford authorized dealers, Ford refuses to replace or repair the Transmissions and merely states that the abrupt and harsh shifting is ‘normal,’” the Ford class action states.

The plaintiffs claim Ford is guilty of unjust enrichment, negligence, breach of implied warranty and breach of express warranty, and of violating the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

The plaintiffs are demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of actual, statutory and punitive damages for themselves and all class members.

The class action lawsuit expands on a previous complaint filed against Ford involving its 10R80 10-speed automatic transmissions that has been limited by a New York federal judge to Ford F-150 pickup trucks.

  1. Lynn Burka says:

I have a 2018 Expedition Max Platinum that started having the down shifting issues with less than 50K miles on it. I was driving down the interstate at 75 mph and all the sudden it was like I slammed on the breaks. The 18 wheeler behind me almost hit me, and had to swerve to mis me. Thank God no one was hurt or injured. I live in TN but I purchased my car in Florida from a dealership that the car was previously owned by the dealership owners family member. The check engine light came on before I got back to TN and when I called them they stated there was no lemon law in FL. I also tried to contact ford to get the Sync system history from when the previous owner owned the car but they were not help at all. I know the dealership knew of the issue before they sold it to me. When I took it to the local dealership they told me that it just shifts hard, and when it has happened since then, they want to keep my car for weeks with no loaner vehicle available while they try to determine the issue. That is not right, no one can go with out a vehicle for a month or 2.

I live in TN, I bought a 2019 F150 I have put 10k miles on the truck and the transmission is basically out according to the dealership l. They gave me a ball park number to replace it at 15 grand. I am literally about sick over this.

when is this going to trial ?

  3. Angela Schlabach says:

I have a 2019 Ford F150 and it has 90k miles. It recently started shifting erratically and shut off on the highway as I was going 70 mph. It was slipping gears so much our mechanic said needed new transmission. So we put a brand new transmission in it (10k), and a month later it is back in the shop for transmission issue. I don’t even tow hardly at all. I want reimbursement for these expenses it is ridiculous to have to put a new transmission in at 90k Miles.

  4. Daniel Powell says:

I purchased a 2020 Ford Explorer new from my local dealership in Dec 2020. In March 2023 I brought the car to the dealership for warning lights indicating a power train issue, loss of all wheel drive and cruise control, and what felt like a sluggish transmission/deceleration when pulling away at stops. Around May 2023 the dealer kept my vehicle for 6 weeks to address a technical service bulletin. As soon as the car was returned, all the same issues persisted. The dealer said they would contact me with how to fix it and never did. I reached out several times, only given very excuses, apologies, and promises, even bringing the vehicle to the dealership at their request to confirm the problems. In Dec 2023 I brought it back again at the dealerships request and a technician rode with me. He acknowledged the issue, have excuses, and promised to address it within a few days. A month later I am still driving the vehicle without important features with no word from the dealer. Given news of transmission issues and axle bolts, both of which were also cited by the dealership, it seems to me that they have no desire to address this issue of poor workmanship and worse service.

    1. Irritated Ford Owner says:

I have the same issue, was told I needed a new transmission. Took it to AAMCO and they found that the radiator had leaked all the fluid into my transmission. Had to get a new radiator but could not afford a new transmission in a 3 year old vehicle. I am also getting all of the light indicators shifting fault and sometime vehicle will not go in reverse. Ford even knows of the issue I have had an open case.

      1. Erik Gaither says:

I just had radiator hoses replace at 100200 in 2019 expedition. Since about 7000 miles truck skips 2 and 4th a lot. But after picking up my SUV yesterday and driving it today about 100 transmission shifts hard around 2 and 4th gear. Near last stop light transmission slips at about 10mph and no power till I turn off idle off switch then switches from 1 to 3rd

  5. Kyle says:

In 2019 or 2020, purchased a 2018 Ford F150 Lariat 4×4, color Guard, 3.5L Ecoboost, 10 speed transmission (10R80). I currently have just over 53k miles on the vehicle and experience harsh jerking, clunking, delayed shifts, and trouble shifting while attempting to accelerate or slow down. At times it feels like the transmission/engine is going to fall out bottom of truck. I have been caught in situations where truck will not move as it should and almost caused some traffic wrecks. I fear for our safety when driving this vehicle now. Unfortunately I don’t have the money to go out and buy another vehicle as there is still a lot tied into this one. What can I do? – “disappointed Ford Truck owner”

    1. Glenb says:

My 2018 ford f150 has a problem with 10r80 transmission. Now I’m afraid to drive it on the street. So it’s seating In the garage.

  6. Phillip Manley says:

I have a 2021 f150 with the10 speed transmission that does in fact shift harsh at times ,and concerned for possible effects concerning this problem .
