Flea & Tick Product False Advertising Class Action Lawsuit

By Mike Holter

Advantage Flea & Tick ProductsA class action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of dog and cat owners alleging, among other things, that Bayer Healthcare, LLC and Merial Limited regularly make false and deceptive claims in advertisements for their flea and tick products.
According to the class action lawsuit, Bayer and Merial collectively sell approximately $2 billion in flea and tick products annually, including Bayer’s line of Advantage, Advantix, K9 Advantix and Advocate products, and Merial’s line of Frontline and Certifect products. These products are sold as treatments for dogs and cats suffering with fleas, ticks, adult flea eggs, larvae, mosquito, heartworm, ear mites and sarcoptic mange. While each one of individual products targets only a limited subset of the pet aliments, all of the products target fleas and their larvae.
The problem, the flea and tick product class action lawsuit states, is that Bayer and Merial make false and/or misleading claims about what these products do. These allegedly false advertising claims include that the products:
* are self-dispersing and cover the entire surface area of the dog or cat’s body when applied in a single limited spot;
* are effective for one month and require monthly application to continue to be effective;
* do not enter the blood stream of the pet and instead move across the pet’s skin to cover the pet; and
* are waterproof and remain effective following shampoo treatments, swimming, or after exposure to rain or sunlight.
The Bayer and Merial Flea and Tick Product Class Action Lawsuit is seeking to recover damages on behalf of all consumers who purchased the products, as well as an injunction barring Bayer and Merial from continuing to misrepresent what their flea and tick products can do.

    My 9 1/2 year old pit bull got a rare but now common auto immune disease called poly arthritis and it’s been the toughest year for
    Both of us from specialist to specialist and there really isn’t any cure. Frontline and the rabbis vaccine along with the Lyme vaccine really did it to him and it’s TERRIBLE to know me doing the right thing going to doctors is cutting my pups life short.

  2. Laura says:

    Ugh.my dog got seizures from it,then stated having heart problems.from the seizures,I would imagine.she was only 9 yrs old.she passed away.if I had realized it could cause that I wouldn’t of used it.but my daughters dog uses it.and she’s fine.but she weighs 80 lbs more.wonder if it depends on the weight,what kind of animal it is? Ethier way.now knowing all this.i will not let that stuff on our new puppies.i rather pick the ticks off if I have too.

    Sad day. Lost our Redbone of 12 years. Within one week of application of Canine Advantax II, my dog began behaving abnormal; Disorientation, declining coordination, problems standing, problems walking, loss of appetite, acid reflux, excessive mouth foaming. All of this led up to our poor Fritz having a terrible convulsive seizure, Solidifying my family’s decision to end his misery.
    Much like the unfortunate stories that accompany my own, the common theme seems to be that said product enters the canine’s nervous system. This ultimately leads to the animals death. Knowing that the current formula has this effect will hopefully open the eyes of the scientist who push this to the market.

    I bought Seresto collar for cats.
    He wore it 3 days.. he has sore bout 3/4 in on his neck and hair is missing… I promise BAYER IF my baby dies from your product.. be prepared

      My 5 year old grey kitty Sootie is dealing with the same thing. Horrible sores on his neck that have spread to his face and around his ears. He is hiding in our bedroom, he feels so badly. I fear for his life. He was at the vets just the day or so before putting the Soresto collar on and was pronounced healthy. A week later his neck is a nasty mess.

    2. Wanda says:

      I am dealing with us now. Except my cat’s neck is very bad it is burned and it is a bloody mess after a few days. And of course I can’t get anyone from Seresto to return my correspondence. I am sick of this

      Both my pups wore celestro collars for a year, I thought they were safe and it would not let us forget to treat them. our pup lexi stopped eating in june 2019 a blood test confirmed she had lymphoma . We decided to treat her and give her the best fight we could, an expensive horrible time this was. She was doing ok until January where her lympnodes enlarged and she couldn’t breathe. We made the decision to let her go. Our other pup maxx seem to follow lexi symptoms this pass November he was trembling, throwing up, stopped eating, back and forth to 3 vet hospitals again we were in the same nightmare. The last hospital sent out a test to confirm lymphoma, which we will know Tuesday march 24, 2020. We are beside ourselves. Both dogs wore it for the same time . these pups are not from the same family and were both healthy pups before they wore these. If id known I would have used nothing at least lyme can be treated. Lexi was only 6 and maxx just turned 5. This has cost over 7 k for lexi’s treatments and already over 6k for maxx and he hasn’t started any treatments. This was going from place to place not getting answers. Its wrong this and all other toxic materials for animals should be pulled from the market until they come up with a natural safe method.

  5. Akiko says:

  6. Yuki says:

    My dog, 6 1/2 year-old White German Shepherd died from K9 Advantix II on 10/2/2017. I wish I knew that they are very toxic to DOGS too.

  7. Jenna says:

    My 2 year old cat died from Cat Advantage II. The vet called Bayer to verify the batch and all the id numbers on the package. My cat had the most horrible death. His body was convulsing because it went into his nervous system. The vet gave him propofol and it didn’t stop the convulsions. Though we didn’t want to lose our cat, we didn’t want him to suffer a painful death either. The vet ultimately told us the most humane thing was to put him to sleep, since it was the most humane thing to do. I was wondering what office to call that is filing this class action?

  10. John says:

    Well this was in 2011, I wonder if that is why we are seeing all of these new flea and tick products that you give orally. As it would seem on the coat would be better to start killing them before they bite, but I guess that is a load of house feathers.
