The Marlboro Lights class action settlement resolves allegations brought by two Arkansas plaintiffs in 2003. The lawsuit accused Philip Morris of using terms like “lower tar and nicotine” when in reality the “lighter” cigarettes did not provide a safer alternative to smoking regular Marlboros.

Philip Morris denied the allegations but agreed to settle the litigation to avoid the risk and cost of ongoing litigation.

Class Members included “all persons who purchased Defendant’s Marlboro Light or Marlboro Ultra Light cigarettes in the state of Arkansas for personal consumption from November 1, 1971 through June 22, 2010.”

The deadline to file a claim for the Marlboro Lights class action settlement passed on Dec. 1, 2016.

Same thing happened to me. Claimed I filed before I was 18 but made sure I didn’t. Seems like their way of not paying everyone what they rightfully deserve.

    Dear Clerk of Court,

I am writing to you today in regards to the settlement of case “Arkansas Marlboro Lights Settlement” No. CV 2003-4661.

Under the settlement procedures, my rights were supposed to have been protected by our class action lawyer, and I believe they were squashed for the financial gain of others to artificially inflate their settlements.

I was informed that my settlement had been reduced to $100 total because I had claimed purchases prior to being the legal age of purchase – 18. I can understand not reimbursing purchases made improperly, but to negate my entire claim for the following ~18+ years of legal purchases seems ridiculous.

At this time I would ask that my claim be reevaluated to include all my purchases made during what the court considers legal purchasing years –essentially acquisitions made over the age of 18 and proper payment be made.

Feel free to contact me at the above number/address for any questions/comments that you may have.

    Sincerely,

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXxx

nice letter.. I hope this does something. Let us know if you get a reply

      1. TT says:

i copied it and mailed one in too. they limited mine to $100 because i was honest and told the truth under perjury of law then they voided my claim because i bought cigs under age 18. seems a little dishonest to file a claim in November without those terms but in March a judge makes that rule on his own. “Back then” no one carded you for cigs….

        1. Don Miner says:

It depends when you bought the cigarettes. It hasn’t always been illegal to buy cigarettes before the age of 18. Also I believe it’s illegal to sell them not buy them.

    2. Angela Cowan says:

The same thing happened to me. Claiming I did a claim before I was 18. Been smoking these cigarettes since before I was 18 but didn’t put it on the form. Seems like it is happening to a lot of people

  8. kendric says:

u have to have a checking account to cash

  9. amy says:

Do. You have. to reside in Arkansas I live there many years ago?I did file a claim but haven’t. Received. Nothing

  10. Sharon says:

I haven’t received anything yet but looks as if I will be accused of claiming before 18. Well yes, I bought those with my money and it was not illegal. Why would be not get our full share? If they want to only pay for after I was 18 it would still be more than $100.00. This seems totally wrong.

    1. Candice says:

I got 100. Ck as well and they stated age. I have been smoking, since i 18 and i am 50 now.
