CBD oil is not regulated by the government.According to certified lab tests, CBD products may contain less of the component than retailers and labels claim.

Portland Lab Tests CBD Oil Levels

As the popularity of CBD has exploded, the hemp derivative may be found in dozens of products, including donuts, beer, water, smoothies, burgers, lotion, lattes, tinctures, and sausages. But the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that since CBD is not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it can be difficult to tell how much CBD is really in these products.

According to certified lab tests ordered by Portland NBC affiliate KGW8, more than a dozen CBD infused products were analyzed to determine whether these products contained as much CBD as their labels claimed. KGW8 sent samples of several CBD products to Green Leaf Lab, a Portland cannabis and hemp testing facility. The lab allows for a 10 percent to 15 percent margin of error.

According to Green Leaf Lab’s results, although CBD Living Water advertises that it contains 5,000,000 nanograms, or 5 ng, of CBD, the testing did not detect any CBD in the water.

Puur CBD gummies were also tested and found to contain less than 20 percent of the amount of CBD advertised on the label. A CBD-infused beer contained little to no cannabinoids, although trace amounts of CBD were found on the inside of the beer container.

While many of the specialty products, such as water, beer, and sausages, were found to contain little to no CBD, testing conducted on tinctures and lotions found CBD percentages much closer to what the labels claimed. Due to the manufacturing process for these products, it may be easier to reproduce a consistent level of CBD in lotions and tinctures as opposed to donuts or beer.

Background on CBD Oil

Although CBD may be derived from hemp or marijuana plants, it does not necessarily contain THC, the active component that causes a high. As CBD products do not cause psychoactive effects, they are currently unregulated by the FDA. The products’ popularity makes them easy to find and purchase.

Research into CBD’s uses indicates that it may be effective in treating childhood epilepsy or general seizures, anxiety, insomnia, and chronic pain.

CBD may be sold in a variety of forms, including tinctures, gummies, capsules, e-liquid for vape pens, lotions or balms, food, coffee, and beer. However, since these supplements are not regulated, they may contain less or none of the advertised CBD, or contain additional ingredients not listed on the label.

Several CBD products have been found to contain inaccurate CBD levels. Companies that may be falsely advertising the amount of CBD oil in their products include:

  • Avid Hemp Gummies
  • Ceres Bounty
  • Diamond CBD vape additive
  • Eco Sciences
  • Experience CBD Gummies
  • Freedom Wellness
  • Funky Monkey vape cartridges
  • Green Machine Pods
  • Hawaiian Health
  • Heady Harvest Gummies
  • Magic Puff Hemp Disposables
  • New World CBD
  • Pheel Goodz
  • Puur CBD Vape Cartridge
  • Wellbies
  • Yolo CBD oil cartridge
  • Zilla Pods

Consumers who have purchased CBD-infused products from these or other companies and believe that the products contain less CBD oil than advertised may be eligible to hire a class action attorney and file a product labeling lawsuit against these manufacturers.
