VW stalling recall overview:
- Who: Volkswagen (VW) recalled certain 2021 ID.4 vehicles.
- Why: A software problem could cause the electric cars to stall while on the road.
- Where: The VW recall is active in the United States.
Volkswagen (VW) recalled 20,904 of its 2021 ID.4 vehicles as a software problem could cause the electric cars to stall while on the road.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) posted the recall to its website Feb. 1.
Volkswagen (VW) says it recalled certain 2021 ID.4 vehicles as software programming may cause the cars’ high voltage battery management control modules to restart or the pulse inverters to deactivate.
If the control module resets while driving, the vehicle’s electric motor will not be supplied with power for the duration of the reset, the VW stalling recall explains.
In rare cases, the pulse inverter may also deactivate while driving.
“Each of these conditions may lead to a loss of propulsion without pre-warning and may increase the risk of a crash,” VW says.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
VW dealers will update software for free, recall notice says
According to VW, the issue stems from the self-diagnosis software of the HV battery management system, which is too sensitive in certain situations.
The automaker says this may lead to an unnecessary reset of the control unit. If this should happen, drivers will get an immediate warning in the instrument cluster.
Dealers will update the HV battery management control unit and the pulse inverter control unit software for drivers of the recalled vehicles, free of charge, according to the VW recall notice.
VW expects to mail owner notification letters March 31, 2023. Owners may contact Volkswagen’s customer service at 1-800-893-5298.
In other VW recall news, in December 2022, the automaker recalled more than 37,000 Beetles in the United States and 5,000 in Canada because they contain potentially dangerous Takata airbag inflators.

5 thoughts onVW recalls ID.4 electric vehicles due to stalling issue
I had the stalling problem yesterday. Or might be the propulsion problem if they are the same thing. While driving on I95 I suddenly lost power and the car would not accelerate. Would not go above 40 mph and traffic was moving at 60 or so. Luckily I was able to get off at the first exit I came to. Could have been much worse. I was terrified and this was a problem in a long list of problems and recalls of my 2021 ID4. The service manager suggested I call Customer Care and ask for a buy-back.
Same as others. Recall service not available, even into next year, and they are unwilling to schedule. This has got to be a class action lawsuit!
I just tried to have the free update to my id.4 that is recalled and the dealership is saying the earliest appointment is anywhere from 6 months to a year?! For a safety recall this feels like grounds for a suit.
I want to be notified of potential class action lawsuits due to this recall.
Please notify me of any class action regarding the 2021 Volkswagen ID 4 suddenly shutting off. Thank You
