Volkswagen is recalling more than 46,000 vehicles in three different recalls caused by faulty rear view cameras, explosive air bags and defective sunroofs.

Read on to see if your vehicle is affected.

Volkswagen recalls vehicles due to potential for exploding air bags

Volkswagen announced July 27 it had recalled 1,216 of its 2016 Audi TT Roadster, TT Coupe, S3 Sedan, R8 Coupe, A3 Sedan, A3 Etron, A3 Cabriolet, 2016 Golf Sportwagen, Golf R, Golf GTI, Golf A7, and E Golf vehicles, as the vehicles’ air bags could explode.

According to safety investigators, the affected vehicles contain air bag inflators manufactured by the company ARC, and which have been linked to injuries and even one fatality in other brands of cars.

“An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking occupants, resulting in serious injury or death,” the recall notice warns.

“An improper air bag deployment may not properly restrain the occupant, increasing their risk of injury in a crash.”

Dealers will replace the front-passenger air bag module, free of charge, the recall states. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Sept. 23.

Volkswagen recalls more than 43K vehicles due to rear view camera issue

Volkswagen has also recalled 43,091 of its 2021 Golf GTI, Jetta GLI, Jetta NF, Arteon FL, Tiguan LWB, 2022 Taos, Jetta PA, Tiguan PA, 2021-2022 Atlas Cross Sport, and Atlas FL vehicles, the company announced July 20.

The automaker said the manufacturing process of the eMMC memory module in the infotainment system may cause the rearview camera image not to display.

“A rearview camera that does not display an image reduces the driver’s rear view, increasing the risk of a crash,” the recall notice says.

Dealers will update the infotainment software free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Sept. 16.

Volkswagen recalls certain Golf vehicles

Finally, Volkswagen has recalled 2,238 of its 2022 Golf R A8 and Golf GTI vehicles due to a sunroof malfunction.

The recall was announced July 27, with the company explaining that the touch switch for the sunroof may be too sensitive, allowing it to be inadvertently pressed.

“A sunroof switch that is inadvertently pressed can result in unintended auto-closure of the sunroof, increasing the risk of injury.”

Dealers will replace the roof module switch for free. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Sept. 23.

The company is not currently facing legal action over these three recalls, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

In June, Volkswagen Group agreed to a water pump class action settlement to resolve claims that certain Volkswagen and Audi vehicles are equipped with defective water pumps.

That settlement follows another Volkswagen class action lawsuit settlement that resolves claims the automotive company built certain Audi vehicles with a defective direct-shift gearbox (DSG) transmission.

  2. Victoria Ortiz says:

Same leak issue with my 2017 Wolfsburg Tiguan. In mine, the water comes in where the passenger visor connects to the roof. My passenger gets wet when we drive in the rain. :-/

  3. lbird says:

Same, 2008 VW and wet floor about 4 inches or more on the driver’s front and back sides. It must be the sunroof? No recalls? Musty, wet and we too do not use the sun roof. GTI was recalled for the same sunroof problem of draining into the car. Sad.

  4. Vicky Teel says:

I have a Volkswagen Tiguan I am having trouble with my sunroof there is a leak problem. My carpet is wet now that it is really cold the water on the carpet is frozen. There is a problem with all of the vehicles. When did you do a recall l need my sunroof fix soon as possible. Thank you

  5. Michelle Cobb says:

My car had a really bad leak from the sunroof and it smells horrible in my car. I don’t ever use my sunroof. One day I was driving down the highway and my sunroof blew open. I tried to hurry up and close it but it snapped and blew off almost causing me to get into an accident and possibly hurting someone behind me. Thankfully no one was hurt but this malfunction needs corrected. VW should be liable to replace or repair sunroof. No one should ever have to deal with this.

  6. Debbie Daniels says:

They should be recalling all vw for sunroof not new that was an ongoing defect my car smells like mildew ,damp rugs ,stains on my interior overhead . It cost $2000 to fix when it’s a known defect . I have 2010 my son has 2016 same problem

    1. Valerie says:

I have 2012 VW Tiguan. I have same problem with sunroof. Water on passenger side front and back seat floor. Dealer wants too much to repair. They need a recall to customers.
