Volkswagen GOLF R Loose Engine Cover Recall Overview:

  • Who: Volkswagen has initiated a recall for 4,269 of its model year 2022 Volkswagen GOLF R vehicles.
  • Why: The recall was initiated after Volkswagen discovered the vehicle’s engine covers could come loose, creating a fire risk.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

Volkswagen has initiated a recall for more than 4,200 of its model year 2022 Volkswagen GOLF R vehicles on account of a defective engine cover.

The recall was initiated after Volkswagen discovered the engine cover could come loose and pose a fire risk by making contact with the engine’s components, according to a safety recall report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Mar. 21.

Volkswagen says the engine cover can come loose in the event the vehicle is being driven “with extreme high accelerating forces.”

After coming loose, the engine cover could make contact with “hot surfaces,” such as the engine’s exhaust turbo charger, causing the cover to melt and potentially start a fire in the engine compartment, according to the recall.

Volkswagen says the defect is caused by potentially insufficient holding forces for the fixation points of the engine cover.

The automaker says, in the event the engine cover has come loose, vehicle owners may “notice a burning smell coming from the engine compartment or when opening the hood.”

Vehicle owners can also detect the issue by observing if the engine cover is not in its correct position, according to the recall.

Volkswagen Obtained First Reports Of Engine Fires In September

Volkswagen says it first received reports of fires occurring in the vehicle’s engine compartments in September of last year and began the process of starting an investigation into the cause in October.

In January, interim results from driving tests showed the engine cover could come loose during certain driving conditions, according to the recall.

Volkswagen says it will remedy the issue by removing the engine cover as it works to create an “improved part.”

“Once an improved part becomes available, owners will be invited back under a separate Service Action to receive a replacement engine design cover,” the recall states.

Volkswagen says it will offer drivers a reimbursement plan and will begin notifying owners and dealers on or before May 13.

Earlier this month, Ford recalled 78,000 of its 2021-2022 Ford Edge SUVs over concerns with the vehicles’ rear view camera.
