General Motors has issued a recall for 10 of its 2022 GMC Hummer EV vehicles over concerns they were manufactured with defective software that could make their rear taillamps become either inoperable or to permanently remain on.
GM says software embedded into the affected GMC Hummer EVs taillamps could cause either one or both of the vehicles’ rear taillamps to become either inoperative or to permanently remain fully or partially on even after the vehicle is turned off.
The Hummer EVs included in the recall were built between Oct. 5, 2021, and Jan. 20, 2022, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) safety recall report.
GM says that Hummer EVs built after Jan. 20 were “built with parts containing corrected software or were repaired prior to shipment.”
The recall was initiated after GM determined the issue caused the vehicles not to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, according to the NHTSA recall report.
GM says the concern is the taillamp issue could pose a safety hazard for drivers on the road.
“A taillamp that fails to illuminate or illuminates incorrectly may reduce the visibility of the vehicle or communicate incorrect information to other road users, increasing the risk of a crash,” the NHTSA recall report states.
In the event a taillamp malfunctions, drivers may be alerted by receiving a “Check [Right/Left] Rear Turn Lamp” notification when attempting to activate a turn signal, according to the NHTSA recall report.
GM Opens Taillamp Investigation Following Employee-Submitted Report
GM opened an investigation into the issue in February after one of its employees submitted a report to the company’s Speak Up For Safety program, according to the NHTSA.
The employee’s report was submitted after they received two reports of malfunctioning taillamps occurring in the field for the 2022 GMC Hummer EVs.
GM says the company has not been made aware of any accidents occurring on account of the taillamp issue.
A class action lawsuit was filed against GM earlier this month by drivers alleging the company’s model year 2015-2019 full-size truck and SUVs are coated with paint that is prone to flaking and peeling.
