2021-2022 Ford Edge SUV Recall Overview:
- Who: Ford Motor Company is recalling more than 78,000 of its 2021-2022 Ford Edge SUVs.
- Why: The vehicles’ rearview camera can display a blank or distorted image, putting drivers in danger.
- Where: The recall is nationwide.
More than 78,000 Ford Edge SUVs are being recalled due to a rearview camera issue.
The recall was issued Mar. 11 on the National Highway Transport Safety Association (NHTSA) website and applies to certain 2021-2022 Edge vehicles. The Edges are being recalled due to a software error that may cause the rearview camera to display a blank or distorted image when the vehicle is in reverse.
“A rearview camera that displays a blank or distorted image can reduce the driver’s view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash,” the recall says.
The issue was brought to Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group for review on Jan. 25, 2022, the recall report says. An analysis of the issue found it is a “randomly occurring issue” caused by the vehicle’s software.
Ford Has Received More Than 400 Warranty Claims Related to Issue
Ford received its first warranty claim for the issue on Feb. 23, 2021, the report said. The automaker has since received 404 warranty claims that may be attributed to the issue. Ford has found the number of claims have steadily increased over time as the vehicle mileage and time in service increased.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits. There are no known injuries so far in relation to the faulty cameras.
Those with vehicles involved in the recall will be contacted by Ford, and the rearview camera software will be updated by a dealer or through a free, over-the-air software update. There are 78,376 vehicles involved in the recall.
Owners may also contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and quote the recall number 22S14.
Meanwhile, Ford is also recalling 157,306 of its 2021 F-150 pickup trucks due to issues with the windshield wipers.
